A little girl hugged the mall Santa…

For one terrifying second, Daniel thought Sophie’s mother would immediately pull her away forever.

The little girl slowly turned around clutching her coat tightly while snow drifted outside the mall windows behind them.

Her mother stood completely still near the entrance.

But something unexpected filled her expression.

Not anger.

Pain.

Daniel carefully removed the fake Santa beard as the last few shoppers wandered past without noticing.

Sophie’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Daddy…”

Before Daniel could move, the little girl ran straight into his arms.

He held her so tightly it felt like he was trying to make up for every lost birthday, every missed bedtime story, every silent night spent staring at old photographs alone.

Sophie’s mother quietly approached them.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then finally she looked at Daniel and whispered:

“You shouldn’t have done this.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“I just wanted to see her once.”

His voice cracked before he could finish the sentence.

Sophie refused to let go of him.

“I don’t want Dad to disappear again,” she cried softly.

Those words broke something inside her mother immediately.

Because the truth was far more complicated than Sophie understood.

Daniel had never stopped loving his daughter.

After the divorce, financial problems and endless legal arguments slowly destroyed any chance of regular visits.

Then Daniel lost his apartment.

Lost his job.

And eventually became too ashamed to let Sophie see how badly his life had fallen apart.

But every single month, he still mailed birthday cards she never received.

Every holiday, he still bought presents he could not afford.

And every Christmas Eve for two years…

he secretly worked as Santa Claus at Brookdale Mall hoping to catch one glimpse of his daughter in the crowd.

Sophie’s mother finally sat down beside them near the glowing tree.

“You should’ve called,” she whispered quietly.

Daniel looked down.

“I didn’t think you wanted me around anymore.”

She wiped tears from her face slowly.

“I was angry at you…”

Her voice trembled.

“But Sophie never stopped waiting for her father.”

The little girl looked back and forth between them silently.

Then she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the folded paper she had handed Daniel earlier.

“Read it,” she whispered.

Daniel opened it carefully with shaking hands.

Written in uneven childish handwriting were only seven words.

“My Christmas wish is us together again.”

Daniel could no longer hold back his tears.

Neither could Sophie’s mother.

Outside, snow continued falling softly across the city while Christmas music echoed faintly through the nearly empty mall.

And beneath the glowing lights of the enormous Christmas tree…

May you like

for the first time in years…

the three of them sat together again like a family.
