GOP Leader Thune Gets FACE TO FACE with Schumer on Senate Floor and Goes Off - 'YOU DID THIS'
WASHINGTON D.C. — Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) is widely known throughout Washington for his calm, measured demeanor. But on Wednesday, the GOP leader reached his absolute breaking point.
In a staggering and highly unusual display of raw anger on the Senate floor, Thune got face-to-face with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, fiercely accusing them of deliberately prolonging the government shutdown and shamelessly using social welfare programs as political leverage.
"YOU VOTED NO 13 TIMES"
The massive eruption occurred during a heated exchange over legislation to temporarily fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides vital food aid to low-income families. As the government shutdown approaches its 30th day, Democrats, led by Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), attempted to push a standalone bill to keep the SNAP benefits flowing while refusing to fund the rest of the government.
Thune was not having it. He immediately fired back, exposing the Democrats' strategy by noting that Republicans have already voted to reopen the government 13 separate times, only to be blocked by Chuck Schumer's caucus at every turn.
“Let me just point out, if I might, that we are 29 days into a Democrat shutdown,” Thune declared, his voice rising through the chamber. “SNAP recipients shouldn’t go without food. People should be getting paid in this country. And we’ve tried to do that 13 times. You voted no 13 times.”
Turning directly toward the Democratic side of the chamber, a visibly exasperated Thune slapped the lectern for emphasis and unleashed on his colleagues.
“You all just figured out, 29 days in, that, oh, there might be some consequences? There are people who’ll run out of money? Yeah, we’re 29 days in,” he shouted. “At some point, the government runs out of money. My aching back. You finally realize this thing has consequences.”
THE HOSTAGE SITUATION
The explosive exchange perfectly underscores the deepening frustration among Senate Republicans. The GOP argues that Democrats are deliberately stalling a full reopening of the government simply to extract unrelated, partisan spending priorities—specifically, demanding renewed subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
Both parties have introduced competing standalone bills to address the SNAP funding lapse, including a broader Republican bill proposed by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) that includes funding for both food aid and military pay. However, Thune dismissed the one-off fixes, demanding Democrats stop playing games and pass a clean continuing resolution.
“We don’t need one-off fixes,” Thune told reporters. “We need to pass a clean, bipartisan bill and get people back to work... This isn’t a political game. These are real people’s lives that we’re talking about.”
"THE SCHUMER SHUTDOWN"
The White House has heavily backed Thune's hardline stance. During a Rose Garden event on Tuesday, President Donald Trump applied massive public pressure, explicitly blaming the Senate Minority Leader for the frozen paychecks of millions of federal workers.
“Schumer and Senate Democrats are holding the entire government hostage,” President Trump declared. “You can call it the Schumer shutdown or the Democrats’ shutdown. They’re doing the wrong thing, and the public knows it.”

Following his floor speech, Thune admitted his patience had completely evaporated after weeks of bad-faith negotiations.
“Sorry, I channeled a little bit of anger there,” Thune confessed to reporters. “But it’s a high level of frustration. They realize this is a losing argument. They’re trying to buy time — and every day they delay makes things worse.”
