Chapter 8 - MRS. RICCI’S SON CAME BACK TO NEW YORK WITH A CLAIM HE DID NOT WANT

Anthony Ricci was sixty-two.
Carlo’s biological son.
The collateral Moretti branch that once threatened governance.
He had lived in Canada for fifteen years.
No company role.
No contact with Lorenzo.
His mother, Teresa, had died.
Mrs. Ricci—his aunt—had finished sentence years earlier and lived quietly in New Jersey.
Anthony returned because special master contacted him.
The B-39 settlement.
$6.2 million.
Misused trust funds.
The new process needed determine whether it represented legitimate harm, governance buyout, or both.
Anthony arrived with independent attorney.
He asked Lorenzo to attend.
Why?
“I need say something to your face.”
Lorenzo went.
Neutral conference room.
Anthony looked like Carlo.
Enough to hurt.
“You hate me?”
Anthony asked.
“I don’t know you.”
“Good.”
Then:
“I don’t want six million.”
Special master lawyer:
“No one offering same amount automatically.”
“I want none.”
“Why?”
“Because it bought my silence.”
“What silence?”
Anthony looked at Lorenzo.
“That my father was Carlo.”
Already public now.
“And?”
“That Antonio knew.”
Lorenzo froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Before murder?”
“Yes.”
Anthony pulled letter from mother.
Authenticated later.
Antonio to Teresa:
Carlo’s child is not responsible for Carlo. I will not place him in succession. I will provide support privately if needed.
There.
Antonio refused bloodline claim but recognized child.
Anthony continued:
“My mother wanted me inside Moretti.”
“My aunt wanted.”
“Carlo wanted.”
“I didn’t.”
“How old?”
“Twenty.”
“Did you meet Carlo?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know scheme?”
“No.”
“After?”
“Pieces.”
“Did you help hide?”
Anthony swallowed.
“Once.”
There.
“What?”
“I destroyed a pager.”
“Whose?”
“My mother’s.”
“Why?”
“She told me it contained messages from Carlo.”
“After Antonio died.”
“Did you read?”
“One.”
“What?”
Lorenzo cannot know Ricci route.
Room silent.
“Why destroy?”
“My mother begged.”
“I was twenty-two.”
“Afraid.”
Lorenzo felt anger.
Then stopped.
Anthony was not asking absolution.
“Did prosecutors know?”
“No.”
“Now?”
“My lawyer already disclosed.”
Good.
“What claim do you want?”
Anthony shook.
“I want trust stop calling me beneficiary.”
“I got money.”
“Education.”
House.
My mother got paid.
“That was benefit.”
“But not compensation for harm.”
“It was payment to keep branch quiet.”
“Return?”
“Some money gone decades.”
“I can repay part.”
Special master would determine.
No moral theater.
Then Anthony said:
“My aunt wrote me after prison.”
Mrs. Ricci.
“What?”
“She said one thing about Clara.”
Lorenzo stiffened.
Clara not present.
Anthony handed copy to counsel, not Lorenzo.
After permissions, summary:
Mrs. Ricci believed Clara’s presence in mansion threatened not just Carlo but Anthony’s old settlement. If Clara exposed Red Door/Bellini records, trustees might discover B-39 misuse and demand repayment. That was part of why she wanted Clara removed.
So medication tampering had financial motive too.
Not only family loyalty.
Clara learned.
She sat quietly.
“Everyone thought she protected son.”
“She protected money.”
“Both.”
Lorenzo said.
Clara nodded.
“Both.”
Again.
Mrs. Ricci’s apology letter had said protecting son’s future.
Maybe she had meant money as future.
No need rewrite.
Anthony voluntarily entered settlement returning remaining traceable funds and waiving any Moretti governance claim.
Not because Lorenzo demanded.
Independent.
He kept normal assets unrelated.
Good.
Then he asked to meet Clara.
She said no.
At first.
Months later yes.
Why?
Curiosity.
They met café with Daniel and Rebecca nearby? Rebecca retired. Maybe Clara’s lawyer.
Anthony said:
“My aunt hurt you partly because me.”
Clara answered:
“No.”
He looked.
“She made choices.”
“You are not bill.”
He cried.
At sixty-two.
Clara did not comfort immediately.
Then:
“Do you want relationship?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She smiled slightly.
“Me neither.”
Not cruelty.
Boundary.
They parted.
Lorenzo later:
“How?”
“Sad.”
“Did he apologize?”
“Yes.”
“Did you forgive?”
“Not mine.”
Exactly.
The trust final accounting now public.
Original $84m.
Improper B-39 allocation $6.2m.
Administrative fees too high.
Valid settlements.
Fraud losses.
Company top-up.
Permanent reserve projected $51m after current claims.
No reversion.
Moretti Holdings contributed extra to restore misused funds.
Shareholders sued board claiming waste.
Court dismissed major claims because board process independent and obligations valid? Could be too precise. Say litigation continued, then settled/dismissed some.
Lorenzo paid his own legal costs.
No company indemnification for some governance review? Board allowed standard. He chose? Avoid grandstanding.
Then Lily faced career crossroads.
Hudson Center offered deputy director.
Administrative.
Less courtroom.
She hesitated.
Sofia case had shown systems matter.
She accepted with condition maintain some clients.
Good.
At first staff resented Moretti connection.
One attorney said:
“Your family money makes fundraising awkward.”
Lily answered:
“I don’t control it.”
“You benefit?”
“Some family privileges, yes.”
Honest.
“Then?”
“I disclose conflict.”
No purity.
Then nonprofit received anonymous $5m donor offer with no name.
Lily suspected Lorenzo.
Called.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
She believed after checking independent. Donor was actually foundation unrelated.
She laughed.
Later told Lorenzo.
“You were offended?”
“Deeply.”
“Good.”
He smiled.
Then she asked:
“Would you donate if asked?”
“Yes.”
“Would you accept no?”
“Yes.”
“Maybe next year.”
There.
Choice.
May you like
Moretti name could support without owning.
Not yet.
