Plot twist

Chapter 5 - PROJECT PHOENIX

The flash drive contained forty-three files.

Spreadsheets.

Voice recordings.

Internal memos.

Draft bankruptcy plans.

Property valuations.

A list of corporate assets marked KEEP, SACRIFICE, or ACQUIRE LATER.

The more we opened, the worse it became.

Arthur had created Project Phoenix eighteen months earlier.

The plan was brutal in its simplicity.

Vance Consolidated would take on enormous debt using inflated project valuations.

Corporate cash would be moved through consultants and shell entities.

The weakest subsidiaries would default first.

Banks would panic.

Credit lines would be frozen.

Arthur would resign publicly, blame market conditions, and allow the company to enter restructuring.

Then a private investment group called Phoenix Ridge Capital would purchase the most profitable assets at distressed prices.

Who owned Phoenix Ridge?

Arthur.

Clover.

Raymond Pike.

And three unnamed partners.

Thousands of people would lose jobs.

Retirement accounts invested in Vance stock would collapse.

Subcontractors would go unpaid.

But Arthur would emerge richer.

Marcus sat at Noah’s dining table staring at the screen.

“This is one of the most calculated corporate self-destruction plans I’ve ever seen.”

Leo leaned against the wall.

“Can we stop it?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Control.”

I understood.

“My shares.”

“Your shares, Wendy’s proxy, and the board.”

Julian added, “Plus regulators.”

Isaac had left after giving us the flash drive.

He had agreed to speak with federal investigators.

Whether that was guilt, fear, or a desperate attempt to reduce his own consequences, I didn’t know.

I no longer cared.

I cared about stopping Arthur.

At noon, Caleb received a message.

He read it twice.

Then looked at me.

“Clover wants to meet.”

Noah immediately said, “No.”

I held out my hand.

“Let me see.”

The message was short.

FLORA, ARTHUR LIED TO ME TOO. I HAVE SOMETHING YOU NEED. COME ALONE.

Leo laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

Julian shook his head.

“You are not meeting her alone.”

“She expects me to.”

“She slept with your husband while secretly being his half sister.”

Leo crossed his arms.

“She’s lost the privilege of setting meeting conditions.”

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

Caleb looked at me.

“We can control the location.”

“How?”

“Public hotel lobby. Cameras everywhere. We stay nearby.”

Noah wasn’t convinced.

“What could she possibly have?”

“Arthur’s unnamed partners,” Marcus said.

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed to the Phoenix Ridge ownership sheet.

“Three beneficiaries are masked behind trusts. If Clover knows who they are, we need that information.”

I thought about the woman who had laughed while I was tied to a beam.

I didn’t trust her.

But trust was unnecessary.

Information was enough.

At 2:00 p.m., I walked into the lobby of the Halston Hotel.

Clover sat alone near the fireplace.

She wore jeans, a sweater, and no makeup.

Without the silver dress and expensive jewelry, she looked younger.

Almost ordinary.

I remained standing.

“You have five minutes.”

She looked at my wrists.

Her face changed.

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re afraid.”

She flinched.

I almost laughed at the echo of what I had told Isaac.

Clover gestured toward the chair.

I sat.

“My father is going to kill me.”

I stared at her.

“Arthur?”

“Yes.”

“Is that literal or dramatic?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation answered me.

I leaned forward.

“What did you do?”

She looked around the lobby.

“He knows Isaac gave you the drive.”

“How?”

“Raymond told him.”

“Then Raymond knows we have Project Phoenix.”

“Yes.”

I exhaled.

“Why are you helping us?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Arthur lied about everything.”

I said nothing.

“My mother told me Arthur was my father before she died. She said he promised to recognize me one day.”

Clover twisted her fingers together.

“After she died, he contacted me.”

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

“And that’s when you entered Isaac’s life?”

“No.”

Her face twisted.

“I met Isaac at a charity event two years ago. Arthur told me Isaac knew who I was.”

My stomach turned.

“You believed that?”

“He said the family had agreed to keep my identity private until he changed the estate plan.”

I understood before she said the rest.

“And Arthur told you the relationship with Isaac would help you control him.”

Clover nodded.

“I know how disgusting that sounds.”

“It is disgusting.”

She closed her eyes.

“But you still did it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I hated all of you.”

That surprised me.

She laughed bitterly.

“My mother spent thirty years waiting for Arthur to acknowledge me. I grew up watching magazine covers of the Vance family.”

She looked toward the windows.

“Isaac with his private schools. Wendy at galas. Arthur giving speeches about family values.”

Her voice hardened.

“And I had nothing.”

“So you decided I deserved to be destroyed?”

“No.”

I stared at her.

She corrected herself.

“At first, I didn’t care.”

At least it was honest.

She continued.

“Arthur said your marriage was already dead. He said Isaac only stayed with you because of your shares.”

I laughed.

“I didn’t even know about my shares.”

“I know that now.”

Clover wiped her eyes.

“Arthur told me if I helped get Isaac to move your voting rights into joint control, he would publicly recognize me as his daughter.”

“And give you eight percent.”

“Yes.”

“The twenty-five million?”

“Payment.”

I shook my head.

“You sold yourself to him.”

Her face broke.

“Yes.”

For the first time, I saw the truth.

Not innocence.

Clover was not innocent.

But Arthur had found every wound inside her and turned each one into a leash.

“What do you have?” I asked.

She reached into her bag.

Noah and Caleb were somewhere nearby.

I resisted the urge to look for them.

Clover placed a small recording device on the table.

“Arthur met the other Phoenix Ridge partners yesterday morning.”

“Who?”

“Two Vance directors and someone from Halcyon Meridian Bank.”

My heart stopped.

“The bank financing the six hundred million?”

She nodded.

“One of their executives knows the project valuations are false.”

That changed everything.

“Name?”

“Thomas Reed.”

I knew the name.

Halcyon Meridian’s regional president.

Clover pushed the recorder toward me.

“I recorded the meeting.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

I picked up the device.

“How much does Arthur know?”

“He knows I have a copy.”

“Does he know you’re here?”

“No.”

A man entered the hotel through the revolving door.

Clover saw him.

Her face changed instantly.

“Get down.”

I turned.

Two men in dark coats crossed the lobby.

Caleb appeared almost immediately.

Noah came from the opposite direction.

Hotel security moved in.

The two men stopped.

One reached inside his coat.

Every security officer in the lobby reacted.

The man slowly removed his hand.

A phone.

Nothing more.

Caleb positioned himself between me and them.

One of the men looked at Clover.

“Your father wants to speak with you.”

Her face went white.

Noah’s voice was calm.

“She’s busy.”

“This doesn’t concern you.”

Noah smiled slightly.

“You’re standing six feet from my sister. It concerns me.”

The man looked at me.

“Mrs. Vance, Arthur would like to resolve this.”

“Arthur had that opportunity.”

“He’s prepared to make concessions.”

I stood.

“So am I.”

The man waited.

“I’ll concede that he’s entitled to competent counsel.”

Noah almost smiled.

We left through a private hotel exit.

Clover came with us.

By five o’clock, the recording was authenticated enough for Julian to contact federal authorities.

By six, Halcyon Meridian had suspended Thomas Reed.

By seven, two independent Vance directors had resigned.

At 7:30, Arthur disappeared.

Caleb got the call first.

He walked into Noah’s study.

“Arthur’s gone.”

“What do you mean gone?”

“His driver says he never came home. Company plane is still in Chicago. His passport was flagged, but he hasn’t crossed a border.”

Marcus frowned.

“Where would he go?”

Clover answered.

“The lake house.”

Everyone turned.

“What lake house?” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Not the Vance retreat. Another one.”

“Where?”

“Michigan.”

Noah immediately shook his head.

“We’re not chasing him.”

“We don’t have to,” Caleb said.

He was already typing.

“If we have an address, law enforcement can handle it.”

Clover gave him the location.

Twenty minutes later, deputies were dispatched.

But Arthur wasn’t there.

His phone was found on the kitchen counter.

Beside it sat a single envelope.

Addressed to me.

FLORA.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

You think your father made you powerful.

Ask Noah what Charles Sterling really did.

Then ask why your mother died believing he was innocent.

My hands went cold.

I read the words again.

Noah stared at the page.

“What is this?”

I looked at him.

“You tell me.”

His face showed genuine confusion.

But something else happened across the room.

Julian looked away.

Just for a second.

I saw it.

“Julian.”

He didn’t answer.

My heart began pounding.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“What did Dad do?”

Noah turned toward him.

“You know something?”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Not everything.”

My voice dropped.

“What do you know?”

He slowly sat down.

“Our father didn’t invest in Vance Consolidated because Arthur asked him.”

Silence.

“Then why?”

Julian looked at me.

“Because he owed Arthur.”

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

“For what?”

Julian hesitated.

May you like

Then said the one thing I never expected.

“For the night Mom died.”
