Chapter 4 - The Altar of Judgment

The Cathedral of Saint Mark was a magnificent gothic structure, featuring towering stained-glass windows, carved marble pillars, and a massive organ that filled the vaulted ceilings with majestic sound.

It was the kind of church where the hyper-wealthy came to display their status, pretending to be holy while hiding their sins beneath custom-made designer clothes.

By 9:45 AM, the pews were packed with high-society guests: politicians, high-ranking CEOs, celebrities, and media moguls. Flowers worth hundreds of thousands of dollars lined the aisle, filling the air with the suffocating scent of white lilies and roses.

At the front of the altar stood Elian Vale.

He looked stunningly handsome in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his hair perfectly styled, a brilliant diamond ring resting in his pocket. He was smiling, chatting comfortably with his groomsmen, looking like a man who believed the world belonged to him.

Nearby stood his father, Victor Vale. Victor was a tall, imposing man in his late fifties, with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and an aura of absolute authority. He was greeting guests, shaking hands, accepting congratulations as if he were a king preparing to hand over a second crown to his son.

I walked down the side aisle, taking my place near the front of the altar where the bridal party was supposed to gather. My sharp black suit stood out starkly against the sea of pastels and floral dresses.

Victor caught sight of me. His eyes narrowed slightly as he took in my attire. He walked over, a patronizing, arrogant smirk playing on his lips.

"Maya," Victor said, his voice dripping with fake warmth as he stepped close enough for only me to hear. "A black suit to a wedding? A bit dreary, don't you think? Though I suppose a divorced, career-obsessed woman like you doesn't have much appreciation for romantic occasions."

I didn't flinch. I turned my head slowly, looking him dead in the eye.

"I dress for the occasion, Victor," I said in a quiet, smooth voice. "And today isn't a wedding."

Victor chuckled, a low, ominous sound. "Listen to me, girl. Your parents are in my pocket. Your sister belongs to my family now. Don't make the mistake of thinking your little consulting firm gives you a seat at the big table. Know your place."

"I know my place," I whispered, leaning in closer. "The question is, Victor... do you know yours?"

Before he could respond, the heavy cathedral doors at the back opened, and the organ shifted into the traditional wedding march.

The guests stood up, turning toward the back of the church.

There stood Mara.

She looked ethereal in her ivory satin gown, holding a bouquet of white orchids. Her veil flowed behind her, but as she took her first step down the aisle, her face was not filled with the timid fear of a victim.

Her head was held high. Her jaw was set. She looked straight at me, receiving a slight nod of encouragement, before locking her gaze onto Elian.

Elian smiled at the altar, waiting for his prize to walk into his trap.

He had no idea that at that exact second, the clock struck 10:15 AM.

Suddenly, the grand wooden doors of the cathedral were pushed open with a loud, echoing bang.

The wedding march abruptly stopped as the organist gasped.

A collective shock ran through the crowd as a fleet of black SUVs pulled up right outside the cathedral steps, their emergency lights flashing red and blue against the stained-glass windows.

Dozens of armed Federal Agents, wearing dark blue jackets with FBI and IRS-CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION emblazoned in bold gold letters on their backs, poured into the sanctuary.

Leading them was Director Arthur Vance, holding a stack of federal arrest warrants.

The pristine, peaceful atmosphere of the elite wedding shattered in an instant. Screams of confusion echoed off the high marble walls as guests scrambled back into their pews.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Victor Vale roared, stepping forward, his face turning bright red with rage. "Do you know who I am?! I will have every single one of your badges by lunch!"

Director Vance walked straight past the panicked guests, stopping right at the base of the altar.

"Victor Vale," Vance announced, his voice booming through the cathedral's acoustic arches. "You and your son, Elian Vale, are under arrest by order of the United States District Court."
