Plot twist

Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Empire

The hospital was a blur of bright lights and white coats.

I stood in the corridor, my chest heavy with a decade of unspoken resentment.

My mother and brother were still trapped in the manor, waiting for the inevitable arrival of the authorities.

I didn't care about them anymore.

I only cared about the woman in the room behind me.

Eleanor opened her eyes as the morning sun began to filter through the blinds.

She looked at me, her gaze clouded with confusion.

“Daniel?” she whispered.

I took her hand, squeezing it gently.

“I’m here,” I said.

“You’re safe.”

“They tried to hurt us,” she said, her voice shaking.

“I know.”

I stood up and walked to the window.

The empire I had inherited felt like a weight around my neck.

For years, I had built it up, believing I was securing a future for my children.

I had been blind to the greed inside my own home.

I had been blind to the rot.

I opened a secure file on my tablet.

It contained the evidence I had spent eighteen months gathering.

Wire transfers, forged medical reports, secret meetings in offshore accounts.

It wasn’t just a case of domestic sabotage.

It was a full-scale corporate takeover from the inside.

I pressed 'send,' and the files went to the federal investigators I had contacted weeks before.

The empire would crumble.

The family name would be tarnished forever.

But that was a small price to pay for the lives of those I loved.

A doctor stepped into the room.

“She’s stabilized, Mr. Blackwell.”

“The toxin was sophisticated, but we caught it in time.”

“What about the baby?” I asked.

The doctor paused, his expression softening.

“The baby is strong, sir.”

“They both are.”

I felt a wave of relief so powerful I almost fell to my knees.

I had returned from the desert to find a tomb, but I was leaving with a life.

I looked back at Eleanor.

She was watching me, her eyes filled with a strength I hadn’t seen before.

“We don’t go back there, do we?” she asked.

“No,” I said.

“We don’t go back anywhere they are.”

“The estate is gone, Daniel,” she said.

“The name is gone.”

“I don’t care,” I replied.

“I never wanted a throne.”

May you like

“I just wanted a home.”
