Chapter 3 - The Vault of Recrimination

The secure interrogation room at the federal building in Manhattan was cast in a cold, shadowless white light.

I sat behind the steel desk, no longer a ruined bride in lace, but wearing my official government identification badge over a dark suit.

Across from me sat Julian, his burgundy shirt wrinkled, his hair unkempt, his eyes bloodshot with a raw, animalistic hatred.

His expensive corporate lawyers stood behind him in silent defeat, their legal folders remaining closed on the table.

"You think this changes anything, Chloe?" Julian hissed, his voice a low, vicious snarl that carried no remaining charm.

"My family’s name is written on half the skyscrapers in this city, and a temporary asset freeze won't keep us inside."

"Your family’s name is being scraped off those buildings as we speak, Julian," I said, sliding a digital tablet toward his chains.

The monitor displayed the live, automated liquidation logs of the Vance holding firm, its stock value crashing to absolute zero.

"The offshore construction accounts you managed were cross-collateralized with your grandfather’s main real estate trust."

"When the federal treasury initiated the treason seizure, the legal ownership of the entire block shifted to the state."

Julian leaned his head back against the concrete wall, a sudden, desperate panic finally breaking through his arrogant mask.

"Cynthia didn't know about the logistics fund, Chloe," he whispered, his tone shifting into a pathetic plea for his family.

"She was just doing what my mother told her to do to protect our social standing before the autumn elections."

"Your sister stood in that garden and used a six-year-old child as a human shield to execute your corporate theft, Julian," I countered.

"She knew exactly where the money was coming from because she signed the secondary wire transfers as the company treasurer."

The door of the interview room opened softly, and Agent Marcus stepped inside, carrying a fresh cup of coffee for me.

"Victoria Vance has just offered a full confession statement to the grand jury in exchange for a lesser facility assignment, Clara," he reported.

"She confirmed that the entire altar ambush was orchestrated to force your family to surrender the valley land titles."

I took a slow, deep breath of the quiet room, the lingering scent of the roses and champagne finally vanishing from my mind.

The people who had spent years telling me I was ordinary, weak, and easily broken were now facing thirty years in a federal penitentiary.

They had built a magnificent empire of fraud, but they had forgotten that a forensic accountant always knows how to find the missing bodies.

"The paperwork is fully finalized, Clara," Marcus added, handing me the official estate restoration decree.

"The house, the gardens, and the entire ancestral estate have been returned to your father's legal trust."

I stood up from the metal chair, looking down at my former fiancé with a look of absolute, profound indifference.

"Goodbye, Julian," I said, turning my back on his rattle of chains as the marshals escorted him toward his cell.
