Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Guard

The old wooden playground structures of the local park stood like dark monuments against the gray sky.
The rain was coming down in relentless sheets, soaking my clothes as I ran across the wet grass.
"Mia!" I screamed into the wind, my voice cracking under the overwhelming weight of the panic.
The tracking signal on Robert's phone led us directly toward the shelter of the old covered bridge.
There she sat, a small shadow curled into a tight ball on the wet wooden planks, clutching her knees.
Her soft curls were damp, her pink sweater ruined by the mud, her frame shivering uncontrollably from the cold.
Robert knelt beside her instantly, his large hands incredibly gentle as he wrapped his coat around her.
"Mia, look at me," he begged, his voice a low, vibrating baritone filled with a breaking love.
"I am your dad, and nothing in any laboratory envelope can ever alter that truth, sweetheart."
Mia lifted her pale face, her wide eyes filled with a profound, agonizing confusion that broke my heart.
"The lady at the table said I'm not really yours," she sobbed, her little fingers digging into his sleeve.
"She said I don't belong to the family name, that I'm just a mistake Mommy made when you were gone."
"The lady at the table is a thief who doesn't understand what makes a father, Mia," I said, kneeling down.
"A father is the person who shows up every single day, who holds your hand when you have a fever."
"You grew in my tummy, and your dad chose you before you were even a blink in the world."
Suddenly, a bright beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness of the bridge, blinding our small group.
Julian Vance stood at the entrance of the structure, flanked by two private security guards in dark suits.
"It’s a touching scene, truly," Julian said, his voice dripping with an absolute, high-society arrogance.
"But the court order has just been signed by the night magistrate, granting me temporary emergency custody."
"The child is coming with me to the Vance estate tonight, so step away from my genetic asset, Robert."
Robert stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a massive, protective shadow over my daughter and me.
He didn't draw a weapon, nor did he shout with reckless anger; his posture became completely rigid with discipline.
"My daughter is not a corporate asset, Vance," Robert said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet frequency.
"And if your men take one more step onto this wood, I will ensure this park becomes your permanent ledger."
Behind Julian, the sharp, high-pitched scream of federal sirens suddenly echoed from the perimeter street.
Three unmarked black transport vehicles swerved onto the grass, their headlights illuminating the entire bridge.
Special Agent Carter from the Federal Treasury division stepped out, holding a stack of warrants high in the light.

"Julian Vance, you are under federal arrest for cyber-espionage and bribery of a medical administrator," Carter announced.
The matrix of manipulation Jenna had initiated to destroy our home had just breached its own execution block.
