Chapter 3 - The Hospital Purge

The emergency wing of Wellstar Kennestone Hospital was quiet, the steady hum of medical monitors creating an artificial peace.

Victoria lay in the private corner room, her left shoulder wrapped in a clean white bandage, her blonde hair perfectly styled despite the late hour. She was scrolling through her phone, her lips curved into a smug, victorious smile as she reviewed the local news alerts.

But her expression instantly vanished when the heavy wooden door of her room was pushed open, splintering against the wall.

I entered first, my trench coat damp from the rain, flanked by Daniel and four armed federal marshals.

"Daniel, thank God you're here!" Victoria cried out, her voice instantly transforming into a high-pitched, theatrical sob. "The doctors said the knife barely missed my main artery! You have to tell the police to keep that unstable girl away from me!"

Daniel didn't rush to her bedside. He stood at the foot of the gurney, his arms crossed over his chest, his face a cold, rigid mask of absolute, unadulterated disgust.

"The police aren't here to protect you from Emma, Victoria," Daniel said, his voice level and ice-cold. "They're here to protect the country from you."

"What... what are you talking about?" she stammered, her eyes darting toward her purse on the bedside table.

"The forensic team verified the Wi-Fi connection on Emma's old phone, Victoria," I said, stepping forward and tossing the printout onto her blanket. "You sent those threatening messages from your own office at 1:12 a.m. while Emma was locked in the pantry."

"And we've already frozen your Nassau accounts. The twelve million dollars you siphoned from Daniel's corporate logistics fund has been seized by the federal treasury."

Victoria’s glamorous facade completely shattered, her face twisting into an expression of raw, venomous rage as she realized her escape route had been cut off.

"You think you can ruin me, Arthur?" she hissed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "My father is the senior partner at the largest legal firm in Atlanta. By tomorrow morning, this warrant will be declared void, and I will have custody of every single asset your foolish son owns."

"Your father was arrested at his office thirty minutes ago, Victoria," Special Agent Marcus announced, stepping into the room with a stack of federal indictments. "He’s been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and laundering defense-grade logistics funds through your offshore shell companies."

"And as for your shoulder wound, the medical examiner verified that the angle of the cut is physically impossible to have been made by a fourteen-year-old girl standing in front of you."

"It was a self-inflicted lateral incision, made with a clean surgical scalpel that we just recovered from your vanity case."

Victoria lunged toward her purse, her hand clawing for the small compact pistol she kept hidden in the lining, but two marshals tackled her instantly, pinning her arms against the gurney as the steel handcuffs snapped shut.

"You're nothing without my family, Daniel!" she screamed as she was wheeled out of the trauma bay, her designer hospital gown dragging on the floor. "You're a weak, pathetic engineer, and your daughter is a broken freak!"

I stood by the window, watching her being loaded into the secure police transport vehicle, the red and blue lights painting the wet pavement in rhythmic bruises.
