Chapter 3 - The Mid-Air Intercept

The heavy, metallic thud of the aircraft’s landing gear deploying echoed through the first-class cabin, a physical declaration that our flight was no longer ascending toward the Swiss Alps.
Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the small window, his fingers clawing at the window shade, pulling it open to reveal the dark, pine-covered hills of Maine rising through the thick morning mist below. The brilliant golden light of the New York sunrise had been replaced by the cold, gray drizzle of a northern storm.
"Amelia, please!" Julian gasped, his voice losing all of its high-society arrogance, turning into the high-pitched, desperate whine of a cornered animal. "We can settle this privately! My mother and I... we can return the funds! We can sign the restructuring documents over to your name!"
"The funds are already gone, Julian," I said, my voice remaining perfectly calm, my hand still resting flat on his leather headrest as I looked down at his trembling shoulders. "Your Panama registry was seized by the federal treasury three hours ago. The twelve million dollars you siphoned is currently being routed back to the children’s hospital foundation."
"And as for the documents... I don't need your signature. The prenuptial agreement you signed contains a strict corporate morality clause. Any act of financial fraud or felony indictment immediately voids your marital rights, stripping you of every single asset bearing the Sterling-Mercer name."
Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, her designer purse slipping from her hands and clattering onto the floorboards. A stack of expensive, first-class boarding passes and stolen corporate bonds scattered across the carpet like useless green paper leaves.
"Julian, do something!" she screamed, her fingernails digging into his arm until his skin turned red. "You said your lawyers had the federal judge on their payroll! You said we were untouchable!"
"The federal judge was arrested at his country club ten minutes before our flight took off, Vanessa," I said, my voice carrying clearly to the other passengers who were now openly watching the drama.
"He was the primary beneficiary on your mother's offshore development account. The Department of Justice has been tracking his bank routing numbers for six months, waiting for your family to make the transfer that would tie the entire conspiracy together."
"You didn't escape the audit, Julian. You walked straight into the net we spent three months weaving for you."
The flight attendant’s voice came through the cabin’s overhead speaker, her tone calm, professional, and entirely unbothered by the federal raid unfolding in first class.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have begun our descent into Bangor International Airport due to an unscheduled security redirection. Please ensure your seatbelts are fastened and all personal electronic devices are turned off for landing."
Julian fell back against the leather cushions, his chin dropping to his chest, his eyes wide and vacant as the reality of his absolute, lifelong ruin settled into his soul. The handsome, polished prince who had spent three years treating me like a servant in my own father’s house was now completely stripped of his wealth, his reputation, and his freedom.
I stood up straight, smoothing down the front of my royal-blue dress as the plane tilted, its nose pointing down toward the gray runway below.

I didn't look at them again. I walked toward the front of the cabin, the flight attendants opening the heavy curtain of the galley to let me pass.
The battle in the clouds was officially won, and the physical execution of their justice was waiting on the tarmac.
