Chapter 4 - The Terminal Valuation

The boardroom doors flew open before Derek could form another sentence or take a single step toward the exit.
Eight federal agents dressed in tactical gear burst into the room, their weapons drawn and focused entirely on the groom.
Behind them walked Elena, Victoria’s attorney, accompanied by the United States District Attorney for the region.
"Derek Sterling, Margaret Sterling, you are both under arrest for federal racketeering and money laundering," the DA announced.
Margaret let out a sharp, piercing shriek of terror as two female agents grabbed her arms, forcing her onto the carpet.
Derek didn't shout; he simply stood paralyzed, his eyes wide as he looked at the massive projection screen on the wall.
The master drive inside Victoria’s coat had automatically connected to the room's wireless network via the phone app.
The screen displayed the complete, undeniable ledger of every dollar he had stolen, highlighted in bright crimson ink.
It didn't just show the theft of her inheritance; it showed the exact dates and times he had met with the cartel middlemen.
He had been so focused on framing his wife for a minor corporate theft that he completely missed the trap she set.
She had intentionally left those accounts vulnerable, knowing his greed would force him to use them for the Omnicorp sale.
By trying to sell the company quickly to escape her tracking, he had presented the federal evidence to the buyers himself.
"Victoria, please," Derek whispered, his voice cracking as the heavy steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists.
"I did it for us, I wanted to build an empire for our family, your father was too cautious—"
"My father was an honest man, Derek," Victoria said, standing up from her chair and walking slowly toward him.
"He built this company with sweat and concrete. You tried to turn it into a house of cards and blood."
She stopped inches away from him, looking down at his immaculate suit, which now looked incredibly pathetic.
"You told the detective this morning that I was a broken wife who had nothing left," she whispered.
"But a forensic accountant is never more dangerous than when she has nothing left to lose but the ledger."
The agents dragged him out of the room, his boots scraping loudly against the polished hardwood floor of the corridor.
Margaret followed behind him, her loud, hysterical weeping echoing down the executive elevator shaft until it died away.
Mr. Vance turned to Victoria, his expression shifting from corporate coldness to a look of profound respect.
"The contract is void, Mrs. Sterling," Vance said, closing his leather folder with a decisive snap.
"But if you are ever interested in restructuring the firm under your sole ownership, Omnicorp is ready to invest."
"The company isn't for sale, Mr. Vance," Victoria replied, her voice filled with an absolute, unyielding calm.
"It belongs to the Sterling name, and it's staying exactly where my father left it."
An hour later, Victoria stood on the open-air balcony of the top floor, looking out over the waking city.
The morning sun was finally breaking through the heavy gray clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the glass towers.
Elena stepped out beside her, handing her a warm cup of coffee and a clean, dry towel for her face.
"The detective from the precinct has been suspended pending an internal affairs investigation, Victoria," Elena reported.
"The phone recording you uploaded from the bathroom completely cleared you of the escape charges."
Victoria took a slow sip of the coffee, the warmth spreading through her tired, aching body.
She reached into her pocket, pulling out the silver master drive, its green light now dark, its mission fully accomplished.
The long, terrifying night of her abuse was finally over, the monster had been locked away behind concrete walls forever.

She looked up at the blue sky, feeling the cold morning wind brush against her skin like a final, loving embrace from her dad.
The trap had closed with absolute, mathematical precision, and her new life had just officially begun.
