Chapter 2 - The Data Bleed

The tiny speaker in the silver pendant continued to broadcast the sounds of my living nightmare.

Every whispered threat, every calculated slap, and every conversation about my inheritance echoed through the trauma room.

Officer Torres immediately drew her weapon, her eyes locked on Raymond as he took a frantic step toward the window.

"Step away from the glass, sir, and put your hands where I can see them," Torres ordered, her voice like iron.

Raymond froze, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps as he looked at the two armed officers in the small space.

Eleanor dropped her designer bag, the legal papers scattering across the linoleum floor like useless trash.

"This is a fabrication!" Eleanor screamed, her voice losing all of its cultivated elegance.

"She’s a computer genius, she used AI to alter our voices to frame us!"

Dr. Monroe stepped back, quickly moving between my bed and my terrified mother to protect me from her reach.

"The biometric signature on this broadcast is military-grade, Mrs. Vance," Officer Torres stated coldly.

"The system is currently uploading these files directly to the federal fraud database as we speak."

I leaned back against the pillows, the physical pain in my ribs suddenly feeling manageable against the wave of relief.

My biological father had been a senior cybersecurity engineer for the defense department before his health failed.

He had known Eleanor was betraying him, but he didn't have the strength left to fight her legally before he passed.

So, he built the pendant, giving me a weapon that would activate only when I reached the absolute brink of adulthood.

"Clara, you monster," Raymond hissed, his fingers twitching as the second officer moved behind him with handcuffs.

"We gave you a home, we kept you fed, and you do this to your own family?"

"You didn't give me a home, Raymond," I said, my voice cutting through his desperate anger.

"You turned my home into a prison, and now you're going to see what a real one feels like."

The metallic click of the handcuffs locking around Raymond’s wrists was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

Eleanor fell to her knees, sobbing violently as the second pair of restraints closed around her manicured wrists.

"Officer, please, I am a prominent member of the charity board!" Eleanor begged as she was pulled up.

"The charity board won't help you clear a federal conspiracy charge, ma'am," Torres replied, leading them out.

The heavy wooden door of the trauma room swung shut, leaving me alone with Dr. Monroe and the quiet hum of the monitors.

The doctor sighed, stepping forward to gently adjust the IV line in my right arm.

"You are a very brave young woman, Clara," Dr. Monroe said, his eyes filled with a mixture of respect and sorrow.

"But we need to get you down to radiology immediately to make sure those ribs haven't punctured your lungs."

"I'm fine, Doctor," I whispered, clutching the silver pendant tightly in my palm.

"For the first time in three years, I can actually breathe."

Ten minutes later, I was being wheeled down the brightly lit hallways toward the scanning wing.

The hospital was quiet at this hour, the regular shifts changing as the morning sun began to hit the glass panels.

As the gurney entered the elevator, a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped inside before the doors closed.

He didn't look like a doctor, and he certainly didn't look like an officer of the local police department.

He turned around, facing me, and pulled a leather wallet from his coat, revealing an FBI badge.

"Clara Albright?" the agent asked, his voice low and incredibly serious.

"I'm Special Agent Vance from the Cyber Crimes Division, and we need to move you to a secure facility immediately."

"Why?" I asked, my grip tightening on the silver pendant once again.

May you like

"Because the files your pendant just uploaded don't just involve your parents," Vance said as the elevator descended.

"Your father uncovered a government data breach, and the people who bought that data are already outside."
