Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point
The crystal chandelier above the dining table sparkled, casting a shimmering light on the fine china and the silver, a display of wealth that had always felt suffocating to Emma.
Margaret, her mother-in-law, had spent the entire evening looking for reasons to fault her.
When Emma served the salad, Margaret peered into the bowl with a look of undisguised revulsion.
"Is this really the best you could manage?" Margaret asked, her voice dripping with disdain.
Before Emma could respond, Margaret rose from her seat with predatory grace.
She grabbed the back of Emma’s head.
In one violent motion, she slammed Emma’s face directly into the enormous silver salad bowl.
Lettuce, dressing, and vegetables exploded across the table, sticking to Emma’s hair and face.
Emma struggled, her hands shaking, before she finally pulled herself free, the dressing dripping down her chin.
The room erupted into laughter.
Daniel, her husband, leaned back in his chair, his eyes watering as he clutched his stomach in amusement.
"Look at her!" he shouted, his laughter filling the opulent room.
"She actually looks better now!"
The guests sat in stunned, uncomfortable silence, their wine glasses suspended mid-air.
Emma stood there, covered in the remnants of the meal, her breathing ragged.
The fear she had felt for a year suddenly evaporated, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.
She stood up to her full height.
Margaret smiled, smug and victorious.
"What?" she sneered.
"Are you going to cry?"
Emma didn't answer with words.
She moved with the speed of a striking viper.
Slap!
The force of her hand sent Margaret’s head snapping to the side, the sound echoing through the hollowed-out silence of the mansion.
Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her reddening cheek, her eyes wide with shock.
"You... you hit me?"
Emma didn't stop.

She turned her gaze toward Daniel, who had fallen silent, his own shock mirrored in his wide, disbelieving eyes.
"Do you think this is funny now, Daniel?"
