Chapter 1 - The Calculated Bait

The hospital room was suffocating, but my resolve was colder than the steel of the guardrail.
Elena watched me, her eyes darting between my bruised face and the data drive, trying to decipher the endgame.
"What do you mean, let them steal one more thing?" she asked, her voice hushed.
"If we freeze the accounts now, they lose the ability to move," I said, my voice raspy.
"But they also lose the motivation to finish the transaction".
I leaned back, closing my eyes to recall the spreadsheet I had memorized weeks ago.
"The merger with Grayson Global," I said.
"It closes tomorrow morning".

"If Derek thinks he's successfully stolen my final inheritance, he'll sign over the last of my father’s properties to seal the deal".
"If he signs while the accounts are 'clean', he leaves himself legally exposed to total fraud liability".
Elena’s eyes widened, her professional mask slipping for a brief second of pure, impressed shock.
"You're trapping them in the merger".
"I'm giving them just enough rope to hang themselves with," I confirmed.
I took the evidence drive from her and set it on the nightstand, keeping it within sight.
"Tomorrow morning, at 9 a.m., he signs the transfer papers for the waterfront land," I explained.
"Once he signs, he acknowledges the transfer under the very shell company accounts I've already flagged".
"By 9:05 a.m., the police won't just have evidence of assault".
"They'll have documented proof of corporate embezzlement".
"And a signed confession of transfer under false pretenses".
I looked at the clock, then at Elena, my heart rate steadying.
"I need you to contact the lead detective," I instructed.
"Tell them the investigation begins tomorrow morning, not a second before".
"They have to be at the board meeting the moment the ink is dry".
"It's a high-stakes gamble, Chloe," Elena warned, her tone grave.
"If he doesn't sign, the evidence is enough to arrest them now, but we lose the chance to ruin their reputation forever".
"He'll sign," I whispered, the thought of Derek’s unchecked arrogance fueling my every breath.
"He's too greedy to see the trap".
"He thinks I'm still the broken woman who's too afraid to speak".
I lay back against the pillows, the exhaustion of the night finally pulling at my consciousness.
But as I drifted off, I wasn't feeling fear.
I was counting down the hours.
The plan was perfect.
I had spent seven years listening to Derek pretend he was the architect of his own success.

Tomorrow, I would show the world exactly how he built it.
And I would make sure he was standing on the wreckage when it fell.
