Plot twist

Chapter 1 - The Checkout Reckoning

The fluorescent lights buzzed.

Above us.

Unforgiving.

The total flashed on the screen.

$1,012.46.

Daniel’s face was scarlet.

Veins pulsed in his neck.

“You expect my mother to pay?”

He barked it out.

Loudly.

Shoppers stopped.

The woman nearby froze.

Her dog food sat idle.

I stood there.

Still.

My heart wasn't racing.

It was cold.

Hard.

I looked at my cart.

Salmon.

French cheese.

Caviar.

Not mine.

Patricia’s.

She stood poised.

Silk blouse.

Innocent eyes.

The performance of a lifetime.

I put my card away.

The decision was made.

“I’ll pay for mine,” I said.

“Patricia pays for hers.”

Daniel stumbled back.

“You’re humiliating her!”

“She’s family!”

“She’s wealthy,” I countered.

“And she’s not my child.”

Patricia sighed.

A soft, sad sound.

“Claire, really?”

The classic pivot.

Making me the villain.

Making my spine a sin.

The teenager bagged.

The world watched.

I felt a surge.

Not anger.

Certainty.

I had the files.

The cabinet.

The truth.

I looked at Daniel.

“Be angry, sweetheart.”

“The surprise is coming.”

Daniel glared.

He saw nothing.

He knew nothing.

But the storm was here.

And he was right in the path.
