Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Empire

They reached the harbor before the sun had fully crested the horizon, the city of the Hamptons still sleeping in a haze of morning mist.

Clara didn't know where to turn, but the fisherman, Arthur, had given her a name—an contact in the city who could help them disappear.

She found the address, a nondescript building that looked like a warehouse but housed the center of the local maritime union.

She didn't hesitate, knocking with a rhythm Arthur had insisted would open the doors.

A grizzled man answered, his eyes softening as he looked at the mother and child shivering on his doorstep.

“Clara Vance?” he asked, his voice rough.

“Arthur told me you were coming.”

He pulled them inside, leading them to a secure office where the walls were covered in maps, schedules, and photos of the Atlantic coast.

“They’re hunting us,” Clara said, her breath still ragged.

“A man in a doctor’s coat—he was sent by Julian Sterling.”

The man frowned, leaning over a desk covered in paperwork.

“Sterling is a powerful man, and your family is even worse.”

“They own the ports, the police, and most of the judges in the county,” he warned.

Clara reached into her pocket, pulling out the small SD card.

“This is footage of them pushing Leo overboard.”

“And it’s proof that the ‘tragic accident’ is a cold-blooded murder attempt.”

The man took the SD card, slipping it into a laptop that looked ancient but functioned with military efficiency.

He watched the footage, his expression darkening with every second of the playback.

“This will destroy them,” he said, his voice quiet.

“But only if it goes public before they get to you.”

“I’ll get this to the right people, but you have to go dark—completely dark.”

He gave her a set of keys to a car, a map marked with a hidden route, and a false identity that wouldn't hold up for long if she stayed in the open.

“Go to the mountains,” he said.

“Stay off the roads, avoid the cameras, and don't check your phone.”

Clara nodded, her mind already focused on the mission ahead.

She wasn't just a mother on the run anymore; she was the architect of their downfall, and she would do whatever it took to see the Vances pay.
