Plot twist

Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

The realization hit me like a blow to the stomach.

Marcus wasn't just alive; he was the puppeteer.

He had been the one whispering in Jack’s ear all along, feeding him lies about me, about the trust, about the life we were building.

The baby monitor audio continued to stream, a terrifying window into their conspiracy.

“She’ll be here for hours,” Marcus said to Lorraine. “The police will arrive shortly for a ‘wellness check.’ We’ll show them the ‘abandoned’ baby on the porch.”

My mind raced, the training I’d gained from my days as a corporate investigator—a past Jack thought I had left behind—snapped back into focus.

I was not the victim here; I was a target who had been underestimated.

I tucked Lily into the folds of my coat and stepped back into the shadows of the porch.

I didn't knock again.

I reached into the hidden seam of my cardigan, pulling out the small, magnetic key-cloner I had kept since my previous career.

It was a contingency I had never hoped to use.

I pressed the device against the side door frame, catching the signal of the new electronic deadbolt.

A green light blinked.

Access granted.

I didn't walk through the front door.

I went to the basement entrance, where I knew Marcus hadn't bothered to update the ancient, rusted latch.

I slipped inside, the smell of damp concrete greeting me like an old friend.

The baby monitor app showed them still in the nursery, laughing as they planned my ruin.

They didn't know I was inside.

They didn't know I had disconnected the home’s main alarm system the moment I entered the basement.

I moved silently, my bare feet making no sound on the floorboards.

I climbed the stairs toward the study, where I knew Jack kept his safe.

If he wanted to destroy me, he needed the original documents of the trust.

I had the master key—the one he thought he had stolen from me.

I reached the study, slipping inside just as the nursery door opened.

Footsteps thundered down the hall.

Marcus.

“Check the perimeter!” he yelled. “I have a feeling she isn't just standing there crying.”

I huddled behind the heavy velvet curtains of the study, my heart hammering.

Marcus walked in, flicked on the light, and paused.

He smelled the dampness.

“She’s here,” he whispered.
