Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Raid

The grand dining hall of the Vance Estate was a breathtaking display of old-money luxury.
Three hundred directors, attorneys, and political sponsors sat at round tables draped in heavy white damask linen. The air was filled with the clinking of crystal glasses, the rich aroma of roasted duck, and the low, tense chatter of a crowd that had just witnessed the most dramatic altar refusal in the history of the city's social circle.
At the head table sat Eleanor and Julian, their faces pale and rigid, their expensive clothes looking like costumes as they tried to maintain their social composure. Julian’s red suit was damp with his own panicked sweat, and Eleanor’s pink bridal gown was bunched up around her gold chair like a monument to her failed pride.
"She’s a hysterical, unstable girl, Julian," Eleanor hissed, her voice a low, vicious whisper as she clutched her wine glass. "We will have our medical team draft an emergency mental incompetence petition before the banks open in the morning. The board will still authorize the merger if we prove she is unfit to manage the estate."
"She’s not unstable, Mother," Julian muttered, his eyes fixed on the empty double doors of the hall. "She’s been tracking us. I saw her look at the Panama files."
"Be quiet!" Eleanor snapped, her manicured fingers tightening around her pearl necklace. "We own the local precinct captain, and we own the bank directors. She has no physical proof."
Suddenly, the classical background music died out, replaced by a sharp, high-pitched system chime that echoed through the high-ceilinged hall.
The three massive, thirty-foot projector screens behind the main stage—the ones meant to display our romantic engagement photos—instantly illuminated with a brilliant, cold blue light.
The guests stopped their conversations, their heads turning toward the screens in a synchronized wave of expectation.
Instead of photos of a happy couple, the monitors displayed a series of high-definition document scans. The files were stamped with the bright crimson ink of the Federal Treasury Division, highlighting a long, detailed ledger of unauthorized wire transfers, forged power-of-attorney files, and fraudulent tax documents.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julian screamed, standing up from his chair, his face turning an instant, pasty white under the chandelier light. "Security! Shut down those screens immediately!"
"The security team doesn't work for you anymore, Julian," my voice boomed through the ballroom's main microphone.
I walked through the double doors, my ivory wedding gown still immaculate, though the veil was gone, revealing the cold, calculating focus of my eyes. Beside me walked Marcus Sterling and my sister, Sarah, flanked by six heavily built federal marshals in dark, tailored suits.
"Harper!" Eleanor shrieked, standing up so fast she knocked her gold chair onto the floor, her pink bridal skirt spilling across the marble. "This is an absolute outrage! You are disrupting a private family gathering with these fabricated lies!"
"The files on those screens were authenticated by the State Supreme Court's forensic division thirty minutes ago, Eleanor," I said, stepping onto the stage and looking down at her.
"The Vance Holding Group didn't just merge with my father's firm; you systematically looted twelve million dollars from our employee retirement fund to pay for your youngest son's gambling debts in Las Vegas."
"And the primary authorization signature you used to clear those funds was my father’s digital key—forged three weeks after his funeral."
A collective, horrified gasp swept through the crowd of directors. The board members in the front row immediately stood up, their faces pale with a sudden, terrified realization of their own legal exposure.
"This is a lie!" Julian roared, lunging toward the stage, his hands reaching for the microphone. "You're a bitter, vindictive girl who's mad because my mother wore a better dress to the wedding!"
"The dress is the least of your mother's worries tonight, Julian," Special Agent Carter announced, stepping forward from the federal escort and holding up a stack of active arrest warrants.
"Julian Vance, Eleanor Vance, you are both under federal arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."
"No!" Eleanor screamed, her voice rising into a crazed, animalistic shriek as two female marshals stepped onto the platform, their hands locking around her wrists, the heavy steel handcuffs snapping shut over her diamond bracelets.
"You can't do this to us! We are the Vances! We built the financial foundation of this entire city!"

"The house you built was paid for with my father's blood, Eleanor," I said, my voice dead, flat, and entirely unbreakable. "And by tomorrow morning, your name will be permanently erased from the registry."
The guests stood on their chairs, their cameras flashing rapidly as the city's most glamorous mother-and-son duo were led out of the grand dining hall in chains, the pink bridal gown and the red suit looking like nothing more than prison uniforms under the cold lights of the federal transport.
