Chapter 2 - The Splintered Facade

The heavy electronic lock of the trauma room clicked into place with a sound that felt as final as a prison door closing.
Beatrice’s perfect, elegant smile froze on her face, the color suddenly draining from her manicured cheeks.
"What is the meaning of this, Doctor?" Beatrice demanded, her voice rising an octave, losing its smooth, aristocratic edge.
"Do you know who I am? My husband’s foundation literally funded the new wing of this pediatric department!"
"I do not care if your husband owns the entire city, ma'am," Dr. Cho replied, her voice dead and flat.
"What I care about is the fact that this young woman has systemic sepsis from an untreated uterine infection."
"And she has deep, physical contusions that indicate she was forcibly pinned down and restrained from seeking medical help."
I stood between my mother and my wife, my mind violently spinning as the pieces of the puzzle crashed together.
I looked at the deep, rhythmic bruises on Madeline’s forearm, then turned my eyes to the heavy gold bracelet on Beatrice’s wrist.
The geometry of the marks was undeniable; the square, heavy links had been pressed into Madeline’s skin with immense force.
"Mother," I whispered, the word tasting like poison in my mouth. "What did you do to her while I was away?"
"Lucas, don't you dare look at me like that!" Beatrice hissed, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious desperation.
"I was protecting you! That girl was going to ruin your focus before the big corporate merger next week!"
"She wanted to drag you to the hospital for a simple postpartum fever, wasting your valuable time!"
Madeline let out a soft, agonizing groan from the gurney, her fingers twitching weakly against the white sheets.
"Lucas... she took my phone," Madeline whispered, her voice cracking as she struggled to breathe through the oxygen mask.
"She locked the bedroom door from the outside... she wouldn't let me get water for Liam... she said I didn't deserve him."
The sheer, monstrous cruelty of the statement hit me with the physical force of a sledgehammer.
My own mother had systematically isolated my feverish wife and newborn son, leaving them to rot in the dark for her own twisted control.
The door handle vibrated sharply, and two uniformed officers from the city police department stepped into the room.
Officer Davis, a veteran investigator with a stern face, looked at the locked door, then at the bruised skin on the bed.
"Doctor Cho, report the situation," Officer Davis said, drawing his notepad as he stepped toward the center.
"We have a clear case of aggravated domestic assault and intentional medical deprivation of a dependent," Dr. Cho stated.
Beatrice instantly stepped forward, her hands smoothing her silk blouse as she tried to regain her high-society authority.
"Officer, this is a private family matter involving a postpartum psychiatric episode," Beatrice said quickly.
"My daughter-in-law is violently delusional, and my son is simply overwhelmed by the stress of his corporate work."
Officer Davis didn't look at her; he walked straight to Madeline’s side, gently taking pictures of the injuries with a digital camera.
"The marks on the victim's arm are consistent with the pattern of the jewelry the suspect is currently wearing," Davis noted.
He turned around, facing my mother with a cold, unyielding professional focus that brooked no argument.
"Ma'am, you need to turn around and place your hands behind your back immediately."
Beatrice stumbled backward against the medical cabinets, her eyes wide with a raw, primal panic.
"Lucas! Do something!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. "Tell them who we are!"
I looked at the woman who had raised me, the woman who had almost murdered my wife and child for her own twisted vanity.

"Officer," I said, my voice dropping into a register that felt entirely cold and dead.
"Please ensure she is processed under the maximum penalty allowed by the law."
