Chapter 2 - The Silent Ruin

The men in suits didn't say a word as they approached Derek.

They didn't need to; their presence alone was a death sentence for his social standing.

Derek backed into the hospital equipment, knocking over a tray of sterile needles that clattered loudly against the floor.

"What is this?" he stammered, his eyes darting toward the exit where Vanessa had already fled.

The lead man reached into his coat and produced a thick, laminated folder.

"Mr. Rhodes sends his regards," the man said, his voice as flat and emotionless as a machine.

"He wants you to know that the eviction notice for your primary residence has been filed."

"And the court order freezing your private assets is now in effect."

Derek looked at me, a desperate, pathetic light of hope in his eyes.

"Marissa, please!" he begged, his voice cracking like glass.

"Tell them it’s a mistake—tell them we have a family to support!"

I didn't even look at him.

I was focused entirely on Holly, whose breathing was beginning to stabilize under the care of the medical team.

"You aren't family," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"You’re a parasite that I’ve finally shaken off."

The two men stepped closer, effectively pinning Derek to the wall.

"We have been instructed to escort you from the premises," the lead man continued.

"Any further interference will be met with legal action that you won't survive."

Derek looked around the ICU, hoping for someone to intervene, but the staff had been instructed to stand aside.

He was a man who had built his life on the assumption that everyone was watching him with admiration.

Now, he realized that everyone was watching him with nothing but disgust.

He was led out of the room, his shoulders slumped, the weight of his own hubris finally crushing him.

I waited until the door closed behind him before I finally exhaled.

The room felt lighter, the oppressive energy of his manipulation finally replaced by the calm clarity of justice.

I walked to the window, looking out over the city lights, and realized that the purge hadn't just been about money.

It had been about reclaiming the dignity I had surrendered for a man who had never deserved it.

The lawyers were already working on the next phase—the complete and total dissolution of his influence.

I wasn't just safe; I was powerful.

And for the first time in my life, I was finally, truly, in control.
