Chapter 1 - The Envelope of Ruin

The silence in the living room was absolute.
Forty guests stood frozen, their wine glasses held in mid-air.
Daniel’s hands shook as he held the letter Margaret had just handed him.
His face turned an ashen white that drained every drop of color from his features.
“Daniel?” Vanessa whispered, her voice losing its edge of venom.
“What is that? What is she trying to do?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
His eyes darted across the page, his breath coming in shallow, frantic hitches.
He looked up at his mother, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of betrayal and disbelief.
Margaret stood tall, her hands folded quietly over her waist.
“Read it out loud, Daniel,” she said, her voice eerily calm.
“Or should I?”
Vanessa tried to snatch the paper, but Daniel pulled away, his movements sharp and defensive.
“No!” he roared, his voice cracking.
“Don’t touch it!”
I took a step toward them, feeling the weight of the moment pressing down on the floorboards.
“What is going on?” I asked, my own voice trembling.
Margaret turned to me, her eyes wet but fierce.
“It’s the medical report, Henry.”
“The one Vanessa hid from us three months ago.”
Vanessa’s expression flickered, panic finally overriding her arrogance.
“That’s a lie!” she shrieked.
“It’s a forgery! She’s trying to destroy our marriage!”
Daniel looked at his wife, his gaze turning dark.
“This isn't a forgery,” he said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.
“It has the hospital’s seal.”
He looked down at the paper again, his hands trembling violently.
“And it says… it says you were never pregnant, Vanessa.”
The room erupted.
Whispers turned to gasps, and the party guests began to shuffle toward the exits, eager to escape the unfolding disaster.
Vanessa backed toward the fireplace, her face pale, her hands clawing at her silk gown.
“I… I had a miscarriage!” she cried out.
“That’s what the doctor told me!”
Margaret didn't move.
“I spoke to that doctor myself yesterday, Vanessa.”
“There was no pregnancy.”
“There was only a lie, designed to keep my son from ever leaving you.”
Vanessa’s face went rigid.
The mask of the perfect wife had shattered, leaving only a desperate, panicked woman in its wake.
I looked at my son, the boy I had raised to be honest and kind, and saw the heartbreak written across his face.
He had believed her.

He had built his entire world around her deception.
And now, the foundation had completely collapsed.
