Chapter 2 - The Mask of Betrayal

The man standing in the doorway was Daniel.
His face was a mask of cold fury, his clothes impeccably dry despite the storm raging outside.
"You were never supposed to find this place, Rachel," he said, his voice dripping with venom.
I clutched the recorder to my chest, my knuckles turning white.
"You've been stealing from me for years," I whispered, the words trembling on my lips.
"I was securing my future," Daniel retorted, his smile barely touching his eyes.
"You were a burden, and I was just clearing the path for something better".
Lily hid behind my cane, her eyes wide with fear.
"Stay behind me, Lily," I commanded, my voice gaining strength with every syllable.
I had faced enemies on the battlefield, and Daniel was no different.
"Arthur!" I screamed toward the door, my voice echoing through the drafty house.
The elderly neighbor appeared in the doorway, but he wasn't alone.
He was accompanied by two uniformed deputies who had been waiting for the signal.
"Daniel Whitaker, you are under arrest for financial fraud and domestic abuse," one of the deputies said, stepping forward.
Daniel’s face paled, his arrogance replaced by a frantic, animalistic fear.
"You can't prove any of this!" he shouted, lunging toward the desk to grab the documents.
I didn't flinch; I stepped in his path, my cane serving as a barrier between us.
"The records are already with my attorney, and the local precinct has the copies of these recordings".
He stopped, his shoulders sagging as he realized the net had finally closed around him.
As the deputies led him away, he looked back, his eyes burning with a hatred that chilled me to the core.
"You'll never be able to keep it all, Rachel," he hissed.
May you like
I watched him go, the rain finally subsiding into a quiet drizzle.
The truth was finally out, but the war for my life was only just beginning.
