Chapter 3 - The Audit of Betrayal

The secure conference room at the federal building in Hartford was silent, the walls built of thick, soundproof glass.
I sat at the head of the mahogany table, my dress uniform pristine, my eyes fixed on the digital ledgers.
Across from me sat Daniel and Vanessa, both dressed in orange county jail jumpsuits that stripped away their luxury.
Their expensive lawyers stood behind them, their faces grim as they reviewed the federal indictment documents.
"Mrs. Hayes—excuse me, Colonel Bennett," Daniel’s attorney began, his voice hesitant and lacking confidence.
"My client is prepared to offer a full confession regarding the logistics database breach if you drop the treason charges."
"We can return the remains of the siphoned funds within forty-eight hours to your personal accounts."
"The funds have already been legally seized by the federal treasury, counselor," I said, my voice dead and flat.
"And I am not the prosecutor; I am the victim of a military cyber-espionage operation."
"Your client used my encrypted login credentials to bypass the port authority's security protocols for eight months."
"They smuggled defense-grade navigation hardware to an unlisted corporate buyer in eastern Europe."
Vanessa looked up, her manicured nails gone, her face pale and devoid of the smug satisfaction she wore on the porch.
"It was Daniel's idea," she whispered, her voice trembling as she tried to shift the blame to her lover.
"He told me your military password was just an old family archive key, that it didn't access anything secure."
"He said you were too stupid and overwhelmed by the pregnancy to ever notice the database logs."
"I noticed the very first transaction, Vanessa," I said, turning my laptop screen toward her side of the table.
"Every single wire transfer you made left a biometric signature that led straight back to your personal laptop."
"I didn't block the transfers immediately because the military intelligence unit needed to map your entire network."
"I let you believe you were winning so you would expose every single corporate buyer associated with your LLC."
Daniel let out a low, guttural growl, his chains rattling loudly against the metal chair frame as he glared at me.
"You're a monster, Claire," he hissed, his eyes bloodshot with a raw, animalistic hatred.
"You let me believe we were married, you let me believe I had a future, while you were building a case to destroy me."
"You destroyed your own future the night you decided to treat your wife and children like collateral, Daniel," I replied.
"You thought I was a powerless clerk because I didn't boast about my rank at your mother's dinner table."
"But a Colonel doesn't need to shout to win a war; we simply organize the logistics of your defeat."
Special Agent Torres entered the room, handing me the finalized custody documents signed by the federal magistrate.
"The parentage rights have been fully terminated, Colonel," Torres reported, her voice carrying an absolute finality.
"Daniel Hayes has no legal standing, no visitation rights, and no future connection to Ethan and Grace."
I stood up from the table, closing my laptop console with a decisive, sharp snap that echoed in the quiet room.
