Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Silence

The silence in the ballroom was not merely quiet; it was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.
Everett’s face had lost all color, turning a sickly, translucent shade of grey.
Delilah, usually the architect of every snide remark in the room, was frozen, her mouth slightly agape as she stared at the silver tray.
I stood there, the red wine stain on my dress darkening, a stark contrast to the cold composure I was maintaining.
Malcolm remained bowed, his posture unwavering.
The three bankers behind him looked past me, their eyes scanning the room for the person in charge.

They weren't looking for Everett.
They were looking for me.
“Madam?” Malcolm prompted, his voice respectful and low.
“The board is waiting in the executive suite.”
I finally nodded, my gaze sweeping across the room.
I looked at Everett, who was trembling, his hands balled into white-knuckled fists.
“Take me to them,” I said.
“I have much to attend to.”
As I turned, the ballroom erupted into a frenzy of whispers.
I didn't care about their confusion.
I didn't care about their judgment.
I was the majority shareholder of the Whitmore account, the silent financier behind the very venue they were currently occupying.
Everett had married me, thinking I was a project to be molded, a "real" girl he could shape into his own hollow image.
He had never once bothered to look at the legal documents I had insisted on keeping separate.
He had never looked at the source of the emergency funding that had saved his father’s failing construction firm three years ago.
He had been too busy looking at my clearance-rack dresses.
He had been too busy worrying about his mother’s opinion.
He had been too busy being small.
I walked past him, my heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.
He reached out, his hand hovering near my arm, but he didn't touch me.
He knew, in that terrifying instant, that the power dynamic had shifted irrevocably.
He was no longer the man in charge.

I was the woman who decided whether his family would sleep in a mansion or on the street.
