Chapter 1 - The Midnight Poison

The paramedics rushed through the penthouse, their heavy boots clattering against the marble floor.
Valeria stood in the shadows of the hallway, clutching her phone as if it were a shield against the unfolding horror.
Teresa was writhing on the floor, her hands clawing at her throat, her face a terrifying shade of purple.
Renata was hysterical, her high-pitched shrieks shattering the already fragile air of the penthouse.
Valeria felt nothing but a cold, heavy numbness as she watched the emergency team stabilize her mother-in-law.
She looked down at the black cake box again, the gold sticker catching the harsh glare of the dining room lights.
Her phone buzzed in her hand; Julián was calling again.
He knew.
He had known exactly what that cake contained.
He had expected her to be the one on the floor, gasping for air, while Teresa stood over her, smug and untouched.
She walked slowly into the dining room, picking up the small silver fork Teresa had used just moments before.
The remaining mousse on the plate was smooth, innocent-looking, and lethal.
Valeria realized that she had survived only by the grace of her mother-in-law's own insatiable greed and arrogance.
The paramedics loaded Teresa onto a stretcher, their faces serious and professional as they prepared to transport her to the hospital.
Renata followed, sobbing, her eyes red and frantic as she pleaded with the medical team for answers.
Valeria remained in the penthouse, the silence returning with a vengeance, the only sound left being the muffled sirens fading into the night.
She walked to the window, the panoramic view of the city glowing like a jewelry box, and wondered how she had lived for ten years without seeing the venom hidden beneath the silk and pearls.
She had built an empire, yet she had been the prisoner of her own family’s hatred.
She had been the one making the money, signing the contracts, and steering the ship, while they were waiting for the moment they could orchestrate her demise.
She unlocked her phone, the screen displaying a dozen missed calls and a string of frantic, panicked text messages from Julián.
He had sent a monster to kill her, and now he was terrified that the monster had targeted the wrong prey.
The truth was a weapon, and Valeria finally understood how to wield it.
She didn't run.

She didn't panic.
She simply started recording.
