Chapter 3 - The Estate Siege

The red and blue emergency lights of six police cruisers cut through the thick, manicured hedges of the Mercer estate, painting the stone facade in rhythmic, artificial bruises.

Daniel stood near the grand fireplace in the living room, his hands shaking violently as he tried to pour a glass of whiskey. The fallen phone lay on the rug, its screen shattered, a constant reminder of the clinical voice that had ended his celebrating.

"We need to pack the files and get to the summer house in Maine, Mother!" Daniel panicked, his voice rising into a frantic, high-pitched shriek. "If the police verify the Zolpidem, they’ll link it to the private prescription you bought under your maiden name!"

Evelyn sat on the sofa, her hands clutching her pearl necklace with a sudden, desperate strength, her perfect high-society composure completely gone.

"Be quiet, Daniel!" she hissed, her eyes darting toward the grand windows where the sirens were growing louder. "We have the best defense attorneys in the state on our payroll. They can't prove I put anything in her tea without physical evidence, and the cleaning lady already washed the teacup."

"They don't need the cup, Evelyn," Detective Harris’s voice boomed through the open foyer as the grand double doors were kicked open.

David and his tactical team stepped into the living room, their weapons held at a professional low-ready, their badges gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

"Evelyn Mercer, Daniel Mercer, you are both under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and conspiracy," Harris announced, holding up the search warrants.

Olivia Hart tried to slip through the side library door, but two female officers instantly blocked her path, pinning her against the mahogany panels and clicking the steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Evelyn screamed, standing up and pointing a trembling, manicured finger at David. "My family has funded this precinct's development programs for a decade! You have no legal authority to enter my home!"

"The home belongs to my sister, Claire, Evelyn," David said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register that made her freeze. "Our father’s estate was never legally transferred to Daniel's name because the prenuptial agreement required a co-signature from my family's trust."

"The files we just seized from Daniel's office show that you forged his signature on five separate real estate deeds to secure your offshore accounts."

"And we found the hidden container of clinical-grade Zolpidem inside your pearl cardigan's secret pocket."

Daniel fell back against the fireplace, his knees buckling completely as the reality of his absolute, inescapable ruin hit him. The smug, handsome prince of the Manhattan social circle was reduced to a pale, shivering felon in front of his peers.

"Claire... she made me do it, Officer!" Daniel sobbed, pointing a shaking hand at his mother. "She said the board would fire me if we didn't secure the corporate shares! She was the one who put the grease on the stairs!"

"Silence, you pathetic coward!" Evelyn roared, her face twisting into an expression of pure, animalistic hatred as she was pulled toward the exit.

The high-society guests who lived in the neighboring mansions stood on their manicured lawns in breathless silence, watching as the city's most elite family was led away in chains.

The perfect performance they had maintained to humiliate and destroy me had become the very stage of their public execution.
