Chapter 2 - The Audit of Power

The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing lights and the constant, reassuring pressure of Daniel’s hand on mine.

"You’re going to be okay," he repeated, his eyes fixed on the road, his jaw set in a line of iron.

"What did you bring, Daniel?" I asked, my voice weak but steady.

"Everything," he replied.

He didn't elaborate, but I knew.

For three years, Daniel had been quietly gathering the evidence I had been too terrified to collect.

By the time the doctors confirmed that the baby was safe, the atmosphere in the city had already begun to shift.

Marissa Kane had not just called the police; she had notified the regional tax authorities, the state board of ethics, and the major media outlets.

When we left the hospital at dawn, the news cycle was already churning.

Richard Whitman’s business dealings—the hidden shell companies, the kickbacks, the systematic siphoning of family assets—were being broadcast across every digital screen in Boston.

We returned to the estate, not as supplicants, but as auditors.

The house, once a fortress of my father's pride, was being emptied of its secrets.

Accountants moved through the halls like ghosts, tagging furniture, securing files, and freezing assets.

My father sat in his study, a broken man, stripped of the veneer of success that had defined his entire life.

I stood in the doorway, watching him.

"The car is mine, Dad," I said, my voice echoing in the mahogany-lined room. "But the house? The company? They were never yours."

He looked up at me, his eyes hollow.

"I was building a legacy for you."

"You were building a monument to your own ego," I replied. "And you did it at the expense of everyone you claimed to love."

I walked away, leaving him to the quiet horror of his own unraveling.

I wasn't a victim anymore.

I was the daughter who had finally seen the truth, and I was ready to claim what was rightfully mine.
