Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror

The air in the living room was thick with the weight of unspeakable betrayals.
Mateo stood by the fireplace, his posture perfectly composed as if he were waiting for a business meeting to commence.
He looked at the officers not as a man facing ruin, but as someone observing an inconvenient procedural error.
"I’m sure we can resolve this with a bit of perspective," he stated, his voice a smooth, practiced baritone.
"My wife has been struggling with postpartum anxieties for years; I’m merely the one who tries to keep our household functioning."
The officer holding the evidence bag didn't flinch.
He stepped forward, his eyes fixed firmly on Mateo, and placed the bag on the coffee table with a resounding thud.
"Mr. Hernandez," the officer said, his tone devoid of any professional warmth.
"We aren't here to discuss your wife's mental health; we are here to discuss what was inside this cup."
Mateo’s gaze shifted to the bag, his composure showing the first microscopic fracture.
"I have no idea what you’re referring to," he murmured, his hands clasped behind his back.
"It’s a simple herbal supplement, the kind any concerned parent might use to assist with a child’s restless nights."
Elena watched him from the corner of the room, her grip on Sofía so tight that her knuckles had turned white.
She had lived with this man for five years, trusting the warmth of his smile and the consistency of his routine.
She realized then that every birthday gift, every quiet evening, and every shared laugh had been part of a carefully curated performance.
He had never been the man she married; he was a man who had built a life out of the silences she had been forced to maintain.
Sofía’s whisper—Will Daddy get mad at me?—reverberated in Elena’s mind, a knife-edge of pure, agonizing reality.
The officer pulled a notepad from his belt.
"The lab technicians will have a full breakdown of these contents within the hour," he said, staring Mateo down.
"And if it turns out that you have been administering unprescribed sedatives to a minor, this conversation is going to change significantly."
Mateo looked toward the stairs, perhaps hoping for a way to retreat into the life he had fabricated.
But there was no retreat left.
The police had already secured the house, and for the first time in their marriage, Elena felt a sense of clarity that bordered on violent.
She did not look at him with hatred; she looked at him with the cold, absolute detachment of a survivor.
The man who had promised to protect their daughter was now the one who had to explain why he was trying to erase her.

She looked at the officer, then at the evidence bag, and felt the first true breath of freedom she had tasted since her daughter was born.
The facade was cracking, and soon, there would be nothing left to hide behind.
