Plot twist

Chapter 4 - The New Beginning

The house was quiet now.

The guests had left.

The police were gone.

Just my parents.

And me.

I sat on the sofa.

The room felt light.

Clean.

I picked up the velvet box.

Ethan’s gift.

I opened it.

An empty ring.

No diamond.

Just a metal band.

A symbol of nothing.

I threw it in the trash.

I looked at my father.

"How long did you know?"

"A few months," he said.

"I wanted to be sure."

"I wanted to protect you."

I understood.

"Thank you, Dad."

I looked at my belly.

The lie was gone.

I wasn't pregnant.

But I was alive.

I was strong.

I had survived the worst.

"What now?" my mother asked.

"Now?" I said.

"I take my life back."

I stood up.

I walked to the window.

The sun was setting.

The sky was gold.

I had seven years of pain.

Seven years of waiting.

But it was over.

I wasn't the woman who begged.

I wasn't the woman who cried.

I was Ava Mitchell.

And I was just getting started.

I looked at the pink flowers.

I decided to keep them.

They were mine.

Everything was mine.

I took a deep breath.

The air felt cool.

Inviting.

I was ready.

Ready for the morning.

Ready for the rest of my life.

The past was a shadow.

It couldn't touch me anymore.

I walked to the kitchen.

I made a cup of tea.

The house was warm.

It was my home.

And I was finally at peace.

I looked at my reflection.

My eyes were clear.

My heart was steady.

I had won the war.

I had conquered the monster.

And I was free.

The future was a vast landscape.

I was ready to inhabit it.

I drank my tea.

I watched the stars.

The night was quiet.

The city slept.

But I was awake.

May you like

I was alive.

And that was enough.
