Chapter 3 - The Legal Battlefield

The next seventy-two hours felt like a slow-motion car crash.
The protective order was served, and the chaos followed with the inevitability of a storm surge.
Laura didn't go quietly; she went screaming.
She filed an emergency injunction, she called his employer, she leaked snippets of their private disagreements to their neighbors, painting him as an erratic, unstable, and dangerous husband.
Carlos, however, stayed behind the shield of his legal team.
He moved into a temporary, secured apartment, keeping Sofía’s location a secret even from his closest colleagues.
He spent his days in depositions, his nights reviewing financial records, and his every remaining moment helping Sofía navigate the sudden, jarring changes in her life.
She was seeing a counselor now—a gentle woman who used play therapy to help her express the fear she couldn't articulate.
One afternoon, Mateo called with an update that made the air in the room feel heavy.
“Laura is doubling down.”
“She’s claiming the bruise was from a rough game you two were playing, and that you manipulated the neighbor to manufacture the video evidence.”
“She’s claiming you hacked her systems to produce a deep-fake.”
Carlos laughed, a sound that held no humor.
“A deep-fake?”
“With her face?”
“Her voice?”
“Her own coat?”
“It doesn't matter what’s true,” Mateo countered, his tone grim.
“It matters what she can present to a judge.”
“She’s betting that a court will be reluctant to separate a child from a mother based on ‘coerced’ evidence.”
“She’s betting on the bias of the system.”
“She’s betting on a losing hand,” Carlos replied.
“Does she know about the financials?”
“That’s the card I’m holding back for the trial.”
“If we drop it now, she’ll try to conceal assets or liquidate everything.”
“When we go to court, we’ll present the evidence of her physical abuse and the financial motive simultaneously.”
“It’ll shatter her credibility.”
The plan was solid, but the psychological toll was immense.
Every night, Carlos lay awake, listening for sounds that weren't there, wondering if Laura was lurking in the shadows of their new life.
He was exhausted, his spirit fraying under the constant barrage of legal attacks and the relentless, gnawing anxiety about Sofía’s future.
He had to be strong, not just for the judge, but for the daughter who looked at him with wary, questioning eyes.
He began to realize that the battle wasn't just about custody—it was about truth.

He had lived for years in a reality that Laura had curated.
Now, he was creating his own gravity.
