Plot twist

Chapter 1 - The Stain of the Ceremony

The red velvet frosting dripped down my chin like freshly spilled blood.

The ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was vast, filled with two hundred of our closest friends and colleagues.

A moment ago, it had been filled with classical music, elegant laughter, and the soft clinking of champagne flutes.

Now, the only sound was the booming, echoing laughter of my new husband, Ed.

"It’s just a prank, babe!" Ed roared, wiping a speck of frosting from his own pristine sleeve.

His groomsmen, a tight-knit circle of his old college fraternity brothers, erupted into loud, synchronized cheers.

They treated the elegant ballroom like a crowded football locker room.

I stood frozen, the heavy paste of the crimson dye blurring my vision and coating my eyelashes.

The vintage, hand-stitched ivory silk gown—the one my late father had secretly saved for years to buy me—was ruined.

The thick red frosting smeared across the delicate bodice, soaking deep into the ancient silk fibers like an permanent injury.

My father had left this dress in tissue paper with a note that read: For the day you find a man who knows your worth.

Ed knew the history of this dress.

He knew it was the final physical connection I had to the man who raised me.

Yet, he had gripped my neck with a vice-like force and shoved my face into the five-tier cake anyway.

I could hear my mother sobbing softly in the front row, her hands covering her mouth in pure, unadulterated horror.

The guests murmured in shocked disapproval, but no one moved to help me.

Ed’s laughter filled the suffocating silence, his chest puffed out as he looked around for approval.

Then, a heavy, metallic scraping sound cut through the noise.

My older brother, Ryan, violently kicked his heavy oak chair aside.

The legs of the chair screeched against the polished marble floor, instantly silencing the room.

Ryan didn't shout, nor did he rush forward with reckless anger.

He walked with a slow, deliberate pace that felt incredibly dangerous.

His jaw was locked tight, his eyes fixed on Ed with a cold, predatory intensity.

Ed’s laughter slowly died down, replaced by a nervous, defensive smirk as Ryan approached the cake table.

"Hey man, relax, it was just a joke," Ed said, holding his hands up but not stepping back.

Ryan didn't answer with words.

He stopped inches away from Ed, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over the groom.

With a sudden, explosive movement, Ryan grabbed the heavy silver cake knife from the table.

The entire crowd gasped as the sharp metal caught the bright chandelier light.

But Ryan didn't aim for Ed's flesh.

He drove the knife straight down through the center of Ed’s expensive, custom-made leather designer shoes, pinning his foot securely to the wooden stage floor.

Ed let out a piercing, high-pitched scream of agony.

Blood instantly began to pool around the white frosting on the floor.

Before the groomsmen could react, Ryan leaned in close, his voice a low, terrifying growl.

"The prank is over, Ed," Ryan whispered.
