Chapter 1 - The Strike of the Iron Duke

The ballroom at Wardington Manor was a gilded cage of noise and forced smiles.

Arthur Wardington, the Duke of Westmoreland, paced the periphery like a caged beast, his eyes scanning the crowd with a chilling, detached precision.

His son, Theo, stood near the refreshments, a frail, trembling boy barely six years old.

Lord Harriman, a man whose wealth was only surpassed by his capacity for cruelty, stumbled toward the boy, brandishing his silver-topped cane like a weapon.

"Get out of my way, you sniveling brat!" Harriman roared, his voice thick with gin.

He raised the heavy cane, aiming a blow at the boy’s shoulders.

Katherine Coldwell, a young housemaid whose quiet presence usually went unnoticed, reacted with the speed of a startled bird.

She lunged, wrapping her arms around Theo and shielding his small body with her own.

The silver-tipped cane crashed down with a sickening thud, catching Katherine directly across the back of her hand.

Blood blossomed across the ivory ballroom floor, the sharp scent of copper cutting through the perfume.

The music skidded to a halt.

"Lower your cane, Lord Harriman!"

The Duke’s voice did not rise, but it thundered through the room, commanding the very air to freeze.

In two long strides, Arthur was upon them, his face a mask of controlled, terrifying fury.

He didn't look at Katherine; he looked at Harriman, his eyes burning with the cold fire of a man who had finally found an outlet for his long-dormant protective instinct.

"You touch a hair on their heads," the Duke whispered, the silence of the room amplifying the threat, "and I will ensure your name is erased from every record in this city."

Harriman turned white, his cane clattering to the floor.

The Duke dropped to his knees, his gaze finally shifting to Katherine, his expression shifting from molten rage to a profound, hollow confusion.

He saw not a servant, but a mother’s courage in a stranger’s eyes.

"Theo," the Duke said, his voice fracturing, "look at me."

Then, he turned to the maid.

"You felt cold and grief," he said, his eyes searching hers, "yet you protected him when I could not."

The room held its breath, waiting for the Duke to speak the words that would change everything.
