Chapter 4 - The Clean Balance

The evening sun cast a long, golden light over the university library, the quiet hum of pages turning creating an absolute peace.
Three months had passed since the morning Brandon burst into my doorway with his cracked phone screen.
The state legal proceedings had moved with a swift, mathematical precision that left no room for family connections or high-society influence.
Brandon had pleaded guilty to two counts of federal wire fraud and identity theft to avoid a maximum ten-year prison sentence.
He was currently serving a three-year term in a secure state facility, his golden-boy lifestyle completely reduced to a gray jumpsuit.
My father had been forced to liquidate Mercer & Sons Holdings to pay the restitution fines to my grandmother’s estate.
The grand family home with the crystal chandelier had been sold at a public auction, the money routed back into the trust fund.
I sat at a wooden study desk, the golden signet ring my grandmother had left me glinting under the reading lamp.
The trust fund had been fully restored to my sole legal name, providing enough tuition for my full four years at Ellison.
My phone buzzed softly against the wood, a notification from a private, unlisted number appearing on the screen.
It was a voice message from my mother, her tone completely hollowed out, devoid of the tight, elegant sighs she used to use.
"Ava... we’re moving into a small apartment near the valley next week. Your father took a job at the local yard. We just wanted to know if you were coming home for the winter break."
I listened to the full message, looking out the wide library windows at the elegant brick buildings of the campus.
I didn't feel hatred, I didn't feel anger, and I didn't feel the need to seek any further vengeance against them.
The numbers on the ledger had reached a perfect, absolute zero, the debt of my childhood fully settled by the law.
I closed the phone console, slipped it into my backpack, and pulled out my new advanced accounting textbook.

The family that had tried to sacrifice my education to protect their golden son was gone into the shadows of the past.
The dark dining room was destroyed, the independent fortress was built, and my real life had just officially begun.
