Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Docks

The red laser sights of the military police rifles danced across the floral wallpaper of my bedroom, focusing entirely on Linda's chest.

"Drop the weapon, ma'am! Drop it now!" the lead investigator shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.

Linda’s hand was shaking violently, her finger tightening on the silver trigger as she backed toward the open window.

"James, tell your men to stand down!" she screamed, her voice losing every shred of its high-society composure.

"If I pull this trigger, the entire shipping dock block will go up in smoke! I have the remote detonator linked to the main warehouse!"

My father did not take a single step back, his eyes remaining as cold and unbreakable as the iron gates of his base.

"The main warehouse was secured by the federal tactical team fifteen minutes ago, Linda," my father said quietly.

"The remote signal you're holding has been jammed by our signal intelligence unit since the moment I stepped out of my staff car."

"Your logistics managers have already signed full confession statements, detailing how you forced Emily to sign the shipping manifests."

Ryan fell back against the radiator, his knees buckling completely as the reality of their absolute, inescapable ruin hit him.

"Mom, drop the gun," he whispered, his voice cracking into a dry, pathetic sob. "They have everything. We're done."

With a heavy, metallic thud, Linda dropped the compact weapon onto the hardwood floor, her hands falling limply to her sides.

The military police moved in instantly, pinning both of them against the wall and clicking the heavy steel handcuffs into place.

"Clara, prepare the medical gurney immediately," my father ordered, turning his back on his sister-in-law's hysterical weeping.

The paramedics rushed into the room, their hands gentle as they lifted my bruised, pregnant body onto the soft transport bed.

As they wheeled me out of the apartment, I looked at the framed wedding photos in the hallway—the beautiful, fake memories we had built.

The smiles in those pictures looked like the masks of monsters, completely hollowed out by the greed that had nearly killed my child.

"You're safe now, Emily," my father whispered, holding my hand tightly as the elevator descended toward the waiting ambulance.

"The army medical team at the base hospital is already prepared for your arrival, and the baby is going to be perfectly fine."

I looked at the silver eagle insignia on his shoulder, feeling the deep, suffocating ice in my chest finally begin to thaw.

The family that had tried to erase my existence to protect their corporate treason was being led away in chains.
