Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

The final act didn't arrive with a bang, but with a whisper of betrayal.
The night before Sofía’s surgery, Nicolás summoned me to his study.
He wasn't alone.
One of his lieutenants was standing by the desk, a folder of surveillance photos in his hand.
"I know you have a phone, Mariana," he said.
"I know you've been recording us."
I felt the air drain from the room.
My heart went deathly still.
"I'm a nurse, Nicolás."
"I record my patients' progress."
"If those records happen to capture what you do in your own home, maybe that’s a testament to the life you've chosen."
He walked toward me, his movements slow, deliberate.
"You’re an honest thing in a house of liars, Mariana."
"But honesty is a dangerous luxury here."
"Then kill me," I whispered.
"But make sure Sofía’s surgery is paid for first."
He laughed, a dry, hollow sound that echoed in the cavernous study.
"I need you, Mariana."
"And more than that, I find your defiance… fascinating."
He didn't take the phone.
He didn't fire me.
He walked to the window and looked out at the city.
The next morning, Sofía’s surgery was a success.
I stood in the hospital hallway and felt a profound, aching sense of liberation.
I was done with the mansion, done with the Beltráns.
I had saved my sister, but I had left a part of myself in that mansion.
I had been forged in the fire of an empire's secret.
I walked out of the hospital, the morning light sharp and blinding.

The world was still waiting, but I was not the same woman who had entered the terminal looking for a future.
I knew that, regardless of where I went, the shadows would always know my name.
