Chapter 4 - The Final Verdict

The ending was as public as the crime had been.
When the police returned, they weren't there for me.
They walked right past me and surrounded Victoria in the lobby, the cold steel of the handcuffs catching the morning light.
She didn't scream this time.
She just stared at me, her eyes filled with a hollow, desperate shock as she realized she had finally lost.
The CPS warrant was vacated within an hour.
Jackson was returned to my care, the drugs fading from his system, his small hands finally gripping mine again.
He was safe.
But I wasn't done.
I didn't just want Victoria in jail; I wanted the system that had allowed her to operate to be gutted.
I used the evidence we had collected to spark a total reform of the county’s medical and social services boards.
The corrupt officials, the bribed doctors, and the compromised agents were all stripped of their power.
It was a total, scorched-earth victory.
A few months later, I sat on my porch, watching Jackson play in the grass.
He was healthy, happy, and oblivious to the war that had been fought in his name.
I looked down at the Birkin bag that had started it all—now sitting in an evidence locker, a trivial piece of plastic in the grand scheme of things.
Victoria was in a cell, her life of luxury reduced to a small, concrete box.
She had thought she could destroy a single mother because I was "penniless."
She had learned that you never fight a mother who has nothing left to lose.
I took a deep breath, the air clean and light.
I had won the war, but I had learned something more important:
The trap was never meant for me.
The trap was always meant for her.
And in the end, she had simply stepped into the hole she had dug for someone else.
The drama was over, but the lesson would remain.
