Chapter 4 - The Final Verdict

The trial was a masterclass in transparency.

I sat in the courtroom, my scars hidden beneath a high-necked dress, watching as Daniel was brought before the judge.

He looked different.

The polished suit, the soft voice, the practiced concern—all of it had been stripped away by the reality of the courtroom.

He looked small, terrified, and utterly powerless.

Vivian sat behind him, a shell of the woman she had been at the hospital, her eyes darting around the room as if searching for a lie that could save her.

She didn't find one.

The prosecutor didn't need to use flowery language.

He simply presented the facts: the financial fraud, the systemic abuse, and the final, brutal act of violence in the kitchen.

The judge’s face grew darker with every piece of evidence presented.

"The actions detailed in these records are not merely domestic disputes," the judge stated, his voice echoing through the silent chamber.

"They are a coordinated campaign of terror and theft, conducted with a level of cruelty that is rarely encountered in this court."

Daniel didn't speak.

He just stared at the table, his world finally collapsing in the face of the truth he had tried so hard to bury.

The sentence was swift and absolute.

Twenty years for the fraud, and a concurrent sentence for the assault, ensuring he would spend his prime years in the very dark he had tried to consign me to.

As the gavel came down, I felt a weight leave my chest that I hadn't realized I was carrying.

I walked out of the courtroom, the cool autumn air welcoming me, free from the shadow of the man who had tried to erase me.

I didn't look back.

I had reclaimed my company, my life, and my future.

I was Isabel, and for the first time, I was the one holding the pen.

The nightmare was over, and the morning, finally, belonged to me.
