Plot twist

Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

Six months into our new life, a letter arrived.

It was addressed to me, but the return address was a law firm I recognized instantly—the one that had managed my mother’s estate for decades.

I didn't open it.

I threw it in the trash, but the next day, a process server arrived at my job site.

"Daniel Whitaker?"

"I'm him."

He handed me a thick envelope.

"You've been served."

I tore it open.

It was a custody lawsuit—not for Lily, but for my inheritance.

My mother was claiming that I had been "coerced" into leaving, and she was seeking to freeze my assets, effectively trapping me in a legal battle that would cost more than I had.

I sat in my truck, the engine idling, the weight of the past pressing down on me.

They were trying to drag me back into the cage.

But they had forgotten one thing.

I had spent my entire life learning how they operated.

I knew their moves, I knew their lawyers, and I knew exactly where the bodies were buried.

I called the law firm I had consulted before leaving.

"We're not going to fight this," I said to the attorney. "We're going to expose it."

I pulled out the ledger I had kept—the one I had started on the day I married Emily, the one that tracked every favor, every bribe, and every illicit transaction my mother had ever made.

I had been prepared for this moment since the day I met my wife.

I hadn't just been a son; I had been an accountant of my family’s sins.

And I was finally ready to settle the balance.
