Chapter 2 - The Chamber of Reckoning

The federal courthouse was quiet, smelling of floor wax and history.
I had cleared the building of all unnecessary staff.
Clara slept in the guest room in my chambers, Sophie curled beside her.
I sat at my desk, looking over the documents I had already ordered subpoenaed.
The financial records of Mercer, Vale, and Knox revealed that Daniel wasn't just a partner.
He was the firm’s primary launderer for a network of shell corporations tied to political graft.
It was a systematic, brutal cycle of greed.
At 3:00 a.m., I received a ping.
My security detail had intercepted a communication from Daniel’s personal email.
He wasn't just planning a legal defense.
He was planning to abscond.
I tapped the button to contact the U.S. Marshal service.
"He's moving," I said to the agent on the line. "Move on him now."
I watched the monitor in my chambers.
A camera feed from an underground parking garage showed Daniel frantically tossing bags into the trunk of his car.
The Marshals were there within seconds.
He didn't even put up a fight.
He was a man who thought he could outmaneuver the system, but he had finally met the person who built it.
As the handcuffs were locked into place, he looked up at the security camera, his eyes wide, as if searching for the woman he had tried to break.
He was looking for someone who could be intimidated.
He was looking for a mother who would stay silent.
He was looking for someone who didn't exist.
I turned off the monitor, the darkness returning to my office, but the weight on my chest was gone.

I wasn't just a mother protecting her child.
I was a judge who had finally brought the law to her own doorstep.
