Plot twist

Chapter 2 - The Architect of Survival

The hospital room was a cage of cold, sterile white.

The police officer, a young man with a badge that looked too shiny for the grim task at hand, hovered near the door.

He held a document in his hand that seemed to pulsate with a dark, suffocating energy.

"Mrs. Sarah Miller," the officer began, his voice devoid of warmth.

"We have received a sworn affidavit from your mother, Linda, and your sister, Erica, alleging that you attempted to induce a miscarriage to evade responsibility for an ongoing fraud investigation at your firm."

"This warrant is for your immediate arrest and psychiatric hold for questioning."

My breath hitched.

Fraud?

My firm was one of the most respected litigation practices in the city.

I spent my days uncovering corporate malfeasance, not committing it.

I looked at Michael, who had arrived just in time to hear the officer's words.

His face, usually a map of calm, calculated intellect, turned a shade of pale I had never seen before.

"Fraud? That is preposterous," Michael snapped, his voice ringing with the authority of a seasoned attorney.

"Sarah is a lead partner. She has zero access to the operating capital they are hinting at."

"The affidavit claims otherwise, sir," the officer replied, his eyes shifting to the ground.

"They have provided bank statements and internal emails that appear to originate from her private server."

I closed my eyes, the agony in my stomach momentarily eclipsed by a terrifying realization.

The files on the floor of my childhood home—those manila folders scattered around me as I bled—were not just random paperwork.

They were part of a frame-up.

Erica and my parents hadn't just attacked me; they had planted evidence while I lay unconscious on that oak floor.

"Michael," I whispered, my voice barely audible above the rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor.

"The folders. In the living room. Look at the signatures."

Michael didn't ask questions.

He leaned in, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned through my exhaustion.

"I'm on it. I’m going to tear their world apart piece by piece."

As the officer reached for his handcuffs, Michael stepped between us.

He didn't use force this time.

He used the law.

"Officer, my wife is currently in critical condition."

"Attempting to move her or subject her to custodial questioning will constitute medical negligence."

"My team is filing for an emergency stay and an injunction against your warrant within the hour."

"You know who I am, and you know I don't lose."

The officer hesitated.

The weight of the Miller name and the influence Michael carried in the legal community was a heavy tide.

He backed away, but the threat remained.

My family hadn't just tried to hurt me; they were trying to erase me.
