Chapter 4 - The Final Verdict

The trial was a blur.

I didn't attend.

I was in Florence, looking at the Duomo, trying to remember what it felt like to breathe.

My lawyer kept me updated.

The story had gone national.

"The Father Who Forgot His Own."

The headlines were vicious.

Daniel was the pariah of the century.

He was facing ten years for fraud and criminal negligence.

Vanessa had testified against him, trying to save her own skin, claiming he had manipulated her into using the insurance money.

She was currently working three jobs just to keep a roof over her head.

I sat in a café and ordered an espresso.

The barista was smiling.

The world was bright and alive, and I was finally starting to feel something again.

My phone rang.

It was Arthur.

"He's been sentenced," he said.

"How long?" I asked.

"Ten years. No parole for the first five."

I took a sip of the espresso.

It was bitter.

But it was real.

"And you, Claire?" Arthur asked. "Are you coming home?"

"No," I said. "I think I'll stay here for a while."

"The company is doing well. We've rebranded. We’ve scrubbed his name from everything."

"Good."

"Do you want to know about him? His life inside?"

"No," I said, cutting him off.

"I don't want to hear his name again."

I hung up.

I walked down the cobblestone street.

I saw a young boy running toward his mother in the square.

I felt a sharp pang in my chest.

It would never fully go away.

But I had survived.

I had destroyed the monster that killed my son.

I had reclaimed my life from a man who thought I was a convenience.

I looked up at the sky.

It was clear and endless.

For the first time in years, I was the one who decided where I went.

I wasn't a wife.

I wasn't a victim.

I was just Claire.

And that was enough.

I turned the corner and disappeared into the crowd, leaving the past in a grave six thousand miles away.

The story was over.

The new one was just beginning.
