Chapter 2 - The Digital Paper Trail

The ballroom lights glittered above us, reflecting off crystal glasses and expensive tuxedos, but to me, the entire room smelled like rotten pride.
Ethan Vance stood near the bar, holding court with three local developers who laughed at every stale joke he made.
He believed he was invincible.
He believed that because he had millions in offshore assets and controlled half the city's commercial zoning boards, no one could touch him.
He had no idea that Sophia had already signed the emergency evidence preservation order five minutes ago.
I walked back up the grand staircase, my steps slow and deliberate, keeping my expression entirely neutral as guests offered polite congratulations.
When I opened the door to our suite, Audrey was sitting on the edge of the bed, her shoulders still trembling beneath her silk robe.
I walked over, sat beside her, and gently took her cold hands in mine.
"He's never going to hurt you again, Audrey," I said softly, looking straight into her eyes. "I promise you."
She looked at the old laptop resting on the nightstand, its screen still displaying the encrypted folder.
"Liam... he has lawyers, politicians, judges in his pocket," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He's spent twenty years building this safety net. What if this isn't enough?"
I opened the laptop screen again, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard as I opened my private forensic tool suite.
"In my eight years at the Attorney General's office, I learned one universal truth about men like Ethan," I told her, pointing to the financial logs.
"They are arrogant."
"They keep detailed records because they love looking at their own power."
"Look at this file right here."
I highlighted an offshore wire transfer dated three years ago—a half-million-dollar transaction routed through a shell company in Belize called Blue Horizon Holdings.
The recipient account matched a private trust controlled by a city building inspector who had mysteriously approved Ethan's sub-par materials for the municipal arena project.
"This isn't just domestic abuse, Audrey," I said, a cold, sharp focus settling into my chest. "This is systemic racketeering."
"He used the threats against you to keep you silent because you were listed as the nominal secretary on three of those shell companies."
Audrey's eyes widened in realization. "He told me I was signing tax forms for my mother's medical care..."
"He set you up as his legal shield," I said, my jaw tightening. "If the federal tax authorities ever audited the accounts, you were supposed to take the fall."
Before Audrey could answer, my secure phone buzzed against the table.
A text from Sophia: Federal task force assembled. Warrants being signed by Magistrate Vance at 2:00 AM. Keep him at the venue.

I looked at Audrey, gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, and stood up.
"It's time to go back downstairs," I said with a calm smile. "Let's let Ethan enjoy the last hour of his empire."
