Chapter 2 - The Empty Vault and the Hidden Deed

The echo of the slamming door faded into the silent Edgewater apartment, leaving Derek standing in a kitchen stripped of everything but his own arrogance.
He stared at the dining table where the simple, cold white sheet of the police report sat next to Skylar's left-behind wedding ring.
"Skylar?" he called out, his voice sharp with a sudden, tense irritation. "Stop playing these stupid games. Suzanne is coming over."
No one answered.
He stormed toward the master bedroom, throwing open the closet doors, expecting to find her hiding or packing in tears.
Instead, the hangers clinked together hollowly in an empty wardrobe.
Her designer shoes, her laptops, her secondary hard drives—everything she had built and bought during her eight years at the logistics company was completely gone.
Derek’s phone buzzed aggressively in his palm. It was Suzanne.
"Derek, where are you guys?" she whined through the speaker. "I'm downstairs in the lobby, and the concierge told me I'm not on the guest registry anymore. He won't let me up."
"Hold on," Derek snapped, his jaw tightening as he walked back to the living room counter where Skylar kept her private lockbox.
He knew she kept the original apartment paperwork and the primary bank cards inside that steel box.
He forced the lock open with a heavy kitchen knife, the metal giving way with a sharp, ugly crack.
Inside the box lay a single, certified document—the apartment ownership deed.
He flipped to the signature page, expecting to see his name stamped proudly alongside hers as part of their marital property.
But his eyes locked onto a hidden clause written in crisp, clinical legal terms.
The apartment had been purchased entirely through a private, pre-marital corporate trust structure, explicitly shielding the asset from any future marital claims or shared equity.
Derek felt a cold sweat break across his neck as he realized the truth.

He had spent three years telling the neighbors, his mother, and his sister that he allowed Skylar to live in his luxury home.
But the paper in his hand proved he was nothing more than a temporary occupant in a fortress he had never owned.
