Chapter 3 - The Shadows of the Joint Account

By midnight, the cold Oregon rain was slamming against the windows of the empty Portland house.
Daniel sat on the floor of the stripped nursery, surrounded by the gold letters that used to read LILY AND NOAH before I packed them away.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his private banking token, desperately attempting to log into the offshore account he had set up in the Cayman Islands.
The screen flashed red instantly.
“Account Restricted by Emergency Injunction: Case Reference #9420.”
The phone in his hand rang, the caller ID displaying the name of his chief operations manager, Arthur Vance.
“Daniel, where the hell are you?” Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with pure terror.
“The board of directors just called an emergency meeting, and they have the complete forensic report your wife turned over to the District Attorney.”
“She’s an elementary school teacher, Arthur, she doesn't know anything about forensic accounting!” Daniel yelled, slamming his fist against the wall.
“She was a teacher before she married you, Daniel,” Arthur corrected him, his tone dropping into a cold, clinical register.
“Before that, she spent three years as a senior auditor at Keller & Voss; she knew exactly where to find the secondary ledger you hid in the marketing budget.”

Daniel let the phone drop to the floor, the realization of his absolute ruin finally breaking through his stubborn arrogance.
He had treated me like a broken, helpless housewife on the day he left, believing my physical weakness from the delivery would keep me silent forever.
