Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in Room 4B

By 6:00 a.m., the interrogation room at the Fairfax County Precinct felt like an iron trap.
Nolan sat at the metal table, his hands cuffed to the floor ring, his face pale and sunken under the harsh fluorescent bulbs.
Across from him sat two federal agents from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, alongside Detective Miller and Blair.
Nolan’s high-priced defense attorney was shuffling through stacks of character references, trying desperately to maintain the narrative of a confused, traumatized husband.
"My client was under immense emotional stress!" the attorney argued, slamming his pen onto the table. "This entire search was executed without a valid warrant! The evidence from the attic is inadmissible!"
Blair didn't say a word.
She simply opened her tablet and pressed play on the decrypted video feed recovered from the green micro-chip found in Nolan’s shoe.
The high-definition video projected onto the wall screen filled the room with crystal-clear audio.
It showed Corinne Ashford standing near the grandfather clock, holding a cup of tea, when Nolan burst through the front door without knocking.
The video recorded his voice, sharp, cruel, and completely devoid of the warm charm he had used for fifteen years.
“Give me the chip, Corinne! You don't know what you're touching!”
The screen captured the moment Corinne tried to pull away, and it recorded Nolan lunging forward, striking her across the face before prying the device from the wood.
It recorded him smashing the camera under his boot, yelling about a "fireplace poker" to create his alibi before dialing 911 on his own phone.
The silence in the interrogation room was total.
Nolan’s attorney slowly closed his folder, pushed his chair back, and looked at his client with an expression of profound, professional disgust.
Nolan couldn't look at the screen.
He stared down at his cuffed hands, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water, every lie he had spent fifteen years building dissolving into thin air.
"Nolan Vickers," Agent Vance stated, stepping forward with a secondary set of federal steel restraints.
"You are under arrest for federal espionage, grand larceny, corporate fraud, and aggravated domestic assault."
As the agents pulled him from the chair, Nolan turned his head, looking at Blair with a desperate, sniveling terror.
"Blair... please!" he sobbed. "I was forced into it! They threatened my accounts! You know I loved you!"
Blair stood up, smoothing down the front of her uniform jacket, her amber eyes as steady as an iron wall.
"You never loved anyone, Nolan," she said softly.

"You were just a ghost in a nice suit."
"And your time in this house is officially over."
