Chapter 2 - THE NETWORK OF RETRIBUTION

The clinking of fine crystal and the low, rehearsed laughter of eighty high-society guests hung heavily over the grand dining room of the Vance estate.

Under the towering, brilliant Christmas tree adorned with hundreds of sparkling golden lights, New York’s most prominent billionaires raised their glasses to celebrate a lie.

The long, polished mahogany table was set with the family’s heavy antique silver, porcelain plates, and a lavishly roasted turkey waiting to be carved.

But the warm, festive glow of the room did not bring peace to my chest.

I sat at the corner of the grand table, my body completely rigid beneath my dark green silk blouse and tailored black trousers.

My fingers clutched a glass of water, the cold ice cubes rattling softly against the crystal as my hand trembled with a quiet, suffocating fury.

I stared blankly ahead, my long blonde hair falling in soft waves around my shoulders, my face a tight, unreadable mask of isolation in a room full of clapping spectators.

Directly across from me, sitting in a high-backed velvet chair, was my husband of three years, Julian Vance.

He wore an immaculate, custom-tailored royal blue suit, his white collar crisp, and a self-satisfied, smug smile carved onto his handsome face.

But he wasn't looking at me.

His left hand was wrapped warmly over the armrest of the woman sitting directly beside him, his fingers gently brushing against her skin with a casual intimacy that turned my stomach to liquid ice.

Chloe Sinclair, my former corporate consultant and very public mistress, sat beside my husband in a stunning, glittering gold maternity gown.

She was heavily, beautifully pregnant, her hands cradling her large, round belly with a proud, theatrical display of maternal victory.

Chloe looked over at Julian with a soft, adoring gaze, her smile carrying a cold, quiet triumph that was meant entirely for me to see.

To the eighty guests at the table, Chloe was the golden princess, the brave woman who was about to deliver the next male heir to the Vance-Bennett logistics empire.

And I was merely "Clara," the barren, unstable wife who sat silently at the edge of her own family's table, waiting to be replaced.

Behind the table, standing near the towering marble fireplace, my stepmother-in-law, Victoria Vance, raised her champagne flute high into the air.

She wore a luxurious, deep crimson sequined evening gown, her silver hair coiffed into a flawless wave, her double-strand pearl necklace catching the brilliant light of the chandeliers.

Above the mantelpiece behind her hung a large, oil-painted portrait of my late father, Arthur Bennett, his kind eyes looking down on the room like a silent, betrayed ghost.

"My dear friends, distinguished colleagues, and partners," Victoria announced, her smooth, high-society voice echoing through the silent, vaulted dining hall.

"Tonight, as the holiday season brings us together, we celebrate more than just the expansion of our maritime shipping lines."

"We celebrate the true legacy of the Bennett name, which will soon be carried forward by Julian and the beautiful new life Chloe is carrying."

The guests clapped enthusiastically, their faces filled with a superficial, rehearsed warmth as they toasted the happy couple in the blue and gold.

I closed my eyes tightly, a single, bitter tear escaping my lashes and tracing a slow, hot path down my pale cheek.

Three years ago, my father had left me the exclusive control of the Bennett Group’s shipping patents, worth over twelve million dollars in international trust funds.

But the moment he passed away from a sudden, highly suspicious heart attack, Julian and Victoria had systematically isolated me from my family.

They had controlled my medications, spiked my daily morning tea with clinical-grade sedatives, and slowly poisoned my mind until the entire board believed I was suffering from severe psychological decline.

They had kept me trapped in our secluded country estate, telling the world I was too fragile to conceive a child, too broken to manage my own father's legacy.

And now, they had brought Chloe into my home, dressing her in gold and presenting her pregnancy as the ultimate justification for my corporate eviction.

"You look tired, Clara," Julian whispered, his deep baritone voice suddenly cutting through my thoughts as he leaned across the table.

"If you are feeling overwhelmed by the holiday dinner, our private driver is waiting in the foyer to take you back to the clinic."

"You don't need to stay for the final signature of the merger deeds."

I slowly opened my eyes, my gaze locking onto Julian’s face, my green silk blouse rustling as my chest rose and fell with a sharp, shallow breath.

"I am staying, Julian," I said, my voice quiet, trembling, yet carrying a cold, crystalline strength that made his smile instantly stiffen.

"Because before you sign those deeds, we need to discuss the medical records I retrieved from the Westchester fertility laboratory this morning."

Victoria's glass stopped in mid-air, her face turning an instant, pasty white under the warm light of the crystal chandeliers.

Chloe’s hand tightened over her gold-clad belly, a sudden, sharp flicker of panic crossing her beautiful features as she looked at Julian.

"What are you talking about, Clara?" Victoria hissed, her voice dropping its high-society sweetness, revealing the raw, desperate predator beneath.

I stood up slowly from my chair, my black trousers stark against the white table, my glass of water resting untouched on the polished wood.

I looked at the eighty guests, then at my husband, and finally at the pregnant woman sitting in my chair.

"My husband told the board that I was barren, that we could never have a biological child of our own," I announced clearly, my voice carrying across the silent dining hall.

"But the clinical records prove that during my medically induced coma last year, Victoria and Julian authorized the illegal retrieval of my frozen eggs."

"The baby Chloe is currently carrying in her womb is not her biological child."

"She is carrying my baby, stolen from my body while I was drugged in their private clinic."

The entire room froze in a state of suspended, paralyzed shock, three hundred ears turning toward the head of the table as the classical music died.

But as the first gasps of horror broke through the crowd, Julian did not panic.

A slow, terrifying, and completely victorious smile slowly spread across his handsome face as he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a single, red-sealed clinical folder and leaned close to my ear, his voice dropping to a low, chilling frequency that made my blood run entirely liquid ice.

"You're right, Clara, she is your biological child," Julian whispered, his eyes flashing with a monstrous, dark satisfaction.

"And that is exactly why you are going to sign the merger deeds tonight."

"Because if you don't, the private clinic doctor has already signed the termination clause for the surrogate contract."
