Chapter 2 - The Phone Call in the Dark

The air inside Arya was thick with a suffocating, frozen silence.
Robert Thorne stood frozen beside our table, his hand slowly lowering back to his side, his face flushing crimson as he looked around at the sea of high-society faces staring back at him in utter horror.
Across the dining room, sitting quietly at a corner table beneath a soft shadow, was my older brother, Julian Davenport.
He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair combed back smoothly, his face a completely unreadable mask. Julian was thirty-four, the managing principal of Davenport Global Capital—the multi-billion-dollar private equity firm that quietly underwrote half the tech acquisitions in North America.
He didn't scream. He didn't jump up to tackle Robert. He didn't make a scene in front of the reporters.
Instead, Julian reached into his breast pocket, pulled out an encrypted satellite phone, and tapped the screen once.
He raised the phone to his ear, his voice calm, quiet, and chillingly precise.
"Initiate the takeover," Julian murmured into the receiver, his dark eyes fixed directly on Robert's trembling back. "Destroy Thorne Dynamics. Tonight."
He hung up without waiting for a reply.
Robert took a hesitant step toward me, reaching out a trembling hand. "Jennifer... wait. You were provoking me. You know how stressed I am with the merger—"
I didn't answer him. I didn't even look at his face.
I simply turned around, holding my six-month-pregnant stomach protectively, and stepped toward the exit.
Julian met me halfway across the polished black marble floor. Without saying a single word, he draped his cashmere overcoat gently across my shoulders, wrapped his arm around my waist, and guided me past the whispering crowd toward the waiting black sedan parked outside.
As the heavy glass doors of Arya closed behind us, Robert’s phone lit up in his pocket with a bright, violent red alert screen:
CRITICAL WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED SHORT POSITION DETECTED
TARGET: THORNE DYNAMICS INC.
IMMEDIATE LIQUIDATION INITIATED BY DAVENPORT GLOBAL CAPITAL
Robert stared down at his phone, his knees suddenly going weak as the realization hit him like a physical blow.

He hadn't just hit his wife.
He had just triggered the total annihilation of his entire life's work.
