Chapter 3 - THE BOARDROOM FALL

The sharp, heavy static of a police scanner suddenly broke the quiet of the driveway as three black SUVs with dark tinted windows tore around the corner of the block.

The vehicles screeched to a halt on the manicured grass of our front lawn, their red and blue tactical lights casting frantic, rhythmic stripes across the white siding of the house.

Eleanor flinched on the threshold, her hand automatically reaching for the doorframe to steady herself as her face lost every single trace of its aristocratic color.

"What is the meaning of this?" she gasped, her voice rising in a high-pitched, desperate panic.

"Damian, call the precinct captain! This is private property!"

"The precinct captain is currently being detained by federal internal affairs, Eleanor," a powerful, familiar voice roared from the driveway.

My older brother, Captain Marcus Bennett of the Federal Treasury's Forensic Division, stepped out of the lead SUV, his tall frame dressed in his dark tactical uniform.

He was flanked by four armed federal marshals, their weapons held at a professional ready as they quickly secured the perimeter of the lawn.

Damian froze near the black garbage bag, his hand dropping from the plastic knot as a red laser target locked directly onto the center of his chest.

"Get your hands away from the bag, Damian!" Marcus commanded, his voice dropping into a cold, military register of absolute, protective fury.

"Get on your knees and place your hands behind your head!"

Before Damian could react, two marshals tackled him to the grass, his expensive phone flying from his grip and shattering on the concrete path as they snapped the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Chloe let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, her arms flailing as she tried to back away toward the open door of the house.

But the female marshal blocked her path, pinning her arm behind her back and securing her hands in a matter of seconds.

Marcus walked past them, his heavy tactical boots clicking sharply against the concrete as he knelt beside the black plastic garbage bag.

With a swift, practiced motion of his tactical knife, he sliced the thick plastic open, revealing the contents inside.

It wasn't a collection of dirty clothes or broken toys.

Inside the bag lay a heavy, metal-encased digital hard drive and a thick, blue leather folder containing my father’s original, uncorrupted logistics ledgers.

"We have the complete digital forensic trail, Eleanor," Marcus said, standing up and displaying a federal seizure warrant stamped in bright crimson ink.

"We have the offshore wire transfer logs showing you siphoned forty million dollars from the employee pension fund to cover your bankrupt real estate investments in Panama."

"And more importantly, we have the forensic toxicology reports proving you systematically poisoned my sister with low-dose clinical sedatives to make her look mentally unstable in front of the board."

I pulled Toby and Maya close to my sides, my tears finally drying as a cold, unbreakable shield of maternal survival settled over my shoulders.

"The game is officially over, Eleanor," I said, my voice carrying a freezing authority that made her chin tremble.

"You thought you could throw me onto the street and lock me in an asylum, but you’ve only succeeded in building your own prison cell."
