Chapter 3 - The Library of Secrets

The air in the ballroom turned into a vacuum.
Elena’s face, moments ago flushed with the thrill of cruelty, now went slack with a different kind of terror.
She looked at the phone in Julian’s hand, then at the ring on her own finger, as if she had never seen it before in her life.
"That's… that's a fabrication!" she stammered, her voice rising to a frantic pitch. "She planted that! She’s trying to frame me!"
Julian didn't blink.
He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her like a shroud.
"The footage is timestamped, Elena. It matches the moment you insisted I have a 'refreshment' before my speech."
The crowd erupted in a low, panicked murmur.
Guests who had been sipping champagne suddenly looked at their glasses with suspicion.
Julian’s head of security, a hulking man named Miller, stepped out from the wings, his eyes fixed on Elena.
"Mrs. Sterling, I’m going to need to ask you to step into the study," Miller said, his tone professional yet firm.
"Don't you dare touch me!" Elena shrieked, backing away until she hit the edge of a mahogany pedestal.
She looked around the room, desperate for an ally, but the elite who had worshipped her minutes ago now recoiled as if she were carrying the plague.
Julian walked past her, ignoring her entirely, and knelt down to help the maid.
"What is your name?" he asked, his voice softening.
"Sarah," she whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek.
"Sarah, you’ve just saved my life. I promise you, you will be compensated for this night a hundred times over."
Sarah didn't look comforted.
She looked at the security team surrounding Elena, then back at Julian.
"She wasn't working alone," Sarah said, her voice shaking but clear.
Julian stopped.
"What do you mean?"
Sarah pointed toward the VIP balcony, where the Sterling family’s chief legal counsel, Marcus Thorne, had been watching with an unreadable expression.
"He told me to put the tray there," Sarah said. "He told me that was your favorite juice, and to make sure you got it exactly when the house lights dimmed."
Julian spun around.
Marcus was already turning to leave, his movements precise and hurried.
"Miller! Stop him!" Julian roared.
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
Security guards bolted toward the exits, but Marcus Thorne was a ghost.
He vanished behind the heavy velvet curtains of the balcony before anyone could reach him.
Elena took advantage of the distraction.
She kicked off her heels and made a dash for the kitchen service door, her silk gown billowing behind her like the wings of a dying bird.
"Let her go," Julian said, his voice cold. "I want her to run. I want to see exactly who she runs to."
I watched from the floor, my cheek still throbbing, realizing that the Sterling empire wasn't just crumbling—it was being dismantled from the inside out.
Julian looked down at me, his eyes burning with a new, dark intensity.
"Sarah, I need to know everything else you saw," he said.
"I saw them meeting in the library," I admitted. "They were talking about a 'transfer of power' happening at midnight."
Julian looked at his watch.
11:45 PM.
"Fifteen minutes," he muttered.
He turned to his lead security officer.
"Lock the estate down. No one leaves. No one enters. And get the legal team on the phone. We’re about to have a very long night."
I stood up, feeling the weight of the evening settle into my bones.
I wasn't just a maid anymore.
May you like
I was the only witness to a coup.
The party was over, but the reckoning was just beginning.
