Chapter 2 - THE SEVERED BOND

The locked office in their Boston penthouse had become a monument to Grant's escalating cruelty, a soundproof room where he would isolate Claire for hours, berating her until she signed whatever financial documents his company required.

"You're making a mistake, Jonathan," Grant said, his voice dropping into the low, menacing register he usually reserved for their private arguments.

"My legal team will have this hospital tied up in civil litigation for the next decade if you think you can just force me out."

"You don't understand the structure of the Bennett Health Alliance, Grant," Claire interjected, her voice carrying a cold, clinical precision that made her husband flinch.

"My father doesn't just own the real estate; he owns the proprietary data architecture that your consulting firm uses for every single one of its medical contracts."

"And as the primary beneficiary of the Bennett Trust, I have the executive authority to terminate those licensing agreements without board approval."

Grant’s face turned an instant, pasty shade of gray, the reality of his situation finally breaking through his arrogant, polished facade.

He had spent five years treating Claire like a submissive, uninformed wife, completely unaware that she possessed the financial leverage to dismantle his entire corporate empire with a single phone call.

"You wouldn't do that," he whispered, his eyes wide with a sudden, primitive terror.

"If you pull the licenses, Mercer Medical will be insolvent by Monday morning."

"I am not pulling the licenses, Grant," Claire said, looking at him with dead, unyielding eyes.

"I am simply allowing the federal auditors to review the unedited transaction logs that you tried to force me to sign."
